Grothenwell

Hi,

Can anyone help with information on where to find details on John Frederick Grothenwell who married Christian Mackie in Aberdeen in 1820. They had 3 children.
He was a merchant seaman and died in Aberdeen 1850. I can find no record of where he came from. From his surname I think he must be of German or Dutch origin.
Any tips on where to search would be most welcome. I have tried various German family sites but have had no reply. I don't know if the BT files at Kew would have any information of help.

Thank you
