If you're interested in knowing more, there's an explanation of the use of j in the following book

Grant G Simpson, Scottish Handwriting 1150-1650

Thanks to all of you for your continued help.It has been amazing.

Ruskie
I don't have the booklet to scan. It  belongs to a friend-she found it among her father's papers. it was about  a society of Paisley weavers.A  fund was being organised to help the poor. It named the Baillies, various  rules and  the financial contributions to be made etc. It was actually printed not handwritten- sorry I should have mentioned that. I haven't read it all yet. Hope to do so soon. It was very interesting. Thanks for other page on the link from sl.

Linda
there was a little letter c after the j but on another part of the page there was a little d after a word. We took them to refer to footnotes. Interesting suggestion about the Latin. Icould see see what you meant when I read the link you gave me.

Hello Margaret

With the d, could Ruskie's URL page help, as maybe the d in your other represents a sum of money -
"the letter d (representing the Latin word denarii, meaning pennies)".

Your very welcome,

Back again to let you know how I got on.I got the booklet from my friend yesterday. We have discovered that my friend's family were involved in shawlmaking in Paisley in the 18th century . The booklet is a fascinating piece of history.Still to study it closely but it appears to be the first meeting of the Paisley Weavers Society incorporated by charter in 1702.I'm attaching the first page to give you an idea of what it's like(there are 8 pages altogether)

I think the s with the small d definitely refers to shillings and pence.
the next few words after laudible are"acts made, or to be made by the said Baillies  and Councill ......."

Thanks again for all your help.
Margaret

I think the s with the small definitely refers to shillings and pence.

I know this is marked completed, but I think sd is simply an abbreviation of "said", as in "said trade" a few lines before, which would make more sense.  Superscript letters aren't usual for  pounds, shillings, pence - £.s.d.
