WW1 Medal Card
« on: Saturday 27 March 10 15:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi,   ??? ::)

I've not seen one of these before.  My Grandfather has a medal card which says Corps LC (Is that the Labour Corps).  Reg No 149875.  It gives dates of enlistment and discharge and says Cause of Discharge Para 392 (XVI)  S.  It also says Action taken List L.C 5069.  That's all that is on there.  Could anyone decipher this for me?  I don't seem to be able to find any other record of him, but I may be looking in completely the wrong places!!

Thank you.

Para 392 xvi = discharged as no longer physically fit for war service. The Action taken refers to the reference to his Silver War Badge [LC 5069] which was issued to men discharged from the services.

I'm pretty sure that LC is Labour Corps.

Sunic,

He was discharged due to sickness (S).

Given the early date of enlistment, he must have been elsewhere prior to the formation of the Labour Corps. I haven't been able to find another medal index card for him, so he may not have served oversea

Thank you Phil.  I've tried posting the number on the Kew site to see if I could get his records, but it draws a blank so I presume they were destroyed in the bombing.  Not sure where else to look.

According to Ivor's book, your Grandfather's service number, as at May 1917, was allotted to 5th Labour Battalion. This was created from the 29th (Works) Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment. The 29th was formed in June 1916.

I can't find a surviving service record either.
