Hi Jill,
I forgot to say in my last message, have you looked at Carol Foreman's
"Troughton Family Genealogy of Westmorland" site?
hppt//

Regards,
Ian

sadly the link seems broken.

There is a Robert on the link I gave you but the dates don't quite fit.

I see on Family Search there is a Robert born 20 Aug, baptised 30 Aug 1835 in Kendal, son of Robert & Hannah. Could this be yours?

I hadn't realised you are a newby, with you saying you were writing a book I assumed you were an old hand.

Apologies if I'm saying what you already know but your best bet would be to find your Robert on the censuses and hopefully the early ones should tell you who his parents were.

Hello Jill,
I am new to this site, after finding your post on a random Google search, and Troughton jumped out at me!
My Mum was a Troughton before she married and was brought up on Fellside in Kendal, and her parents before that were in Sedburgh.
My mother is/was Joan Troughton (1935-) and had a brother Geoff. Their dad was Thomas (Tommy) Troughton and mother Margarent (Madge). They divorced in the late 1950's i think and both remarried.

Not sure this is of any use to you, just thought i would make contact. I am not doing research or anything but thought I would make contact :)

Best wishes
katruss

Hi,

I'm afraid my Troughtons are quite a bit earlier - early 19th century and before. There seem to be a lot of Troughtons in Cumbria but not many elsewhere.

Welcome to Rootschat. Perhaps, if you were doing research you might find a connection!! Go on, you know you want to!!!  ;D ???

oh well!
Since found that my Granddad William Thomas Troughton was born in 1905 and died in 1977.
I am also guessing that your surname is perhaps the same as mine - Russell? Also from Kendal!

Yes - what a coincidence. Russell! That's all it is though - the Troughton connection is on my mother's side, Gibson.

You should follow the line back and see if you come up with anything.
