The surname Serkwell...or similar?
« on: Wednesday 31 March 10 20:39 BST (UK) »
I have details of the Knill family which originated from Monmouthshire - on 9 May 1742, in Tawstock, Devon, John Knill and Sarah Serkwell (or whatever name she is really called...!) married.

I beginning to wonder if Sarah originates from Wales as well, as opposed to coming from Tawstock.

I have had research done for me to no avail.....No sign of any Serkwells in the surrounding parishes of North Devon, no burials, nothing....

Does anybody have any suggestions????

many thanks

Phil

I think Serkwell could be a Cornish name?

Dave....

What makes you think that? It must be a mis-spelling - Could her surname have begun with a C perhaps????

There don't appear to be any other marriages (i.e. siblings) in the surrounding parishes for other names similar to Serkwell either in a certain time span.....

Re: The surname Serkwell...or similar? SERKWETT???

Having been on F*M*P*, I looked up the marriage of John Knill. It had the transcription of Sarah as SERKWETT of which there are some in Carmarthen, Llanyfaelog and Llangunnor, (Carmarthen), Llandysilio, (Powys) and Hubberston (Pembroke).

The latter doesn't seem to far away but is this surname familiar with anybody or does anyone have any thoughts??

Phil

many thanks

You have probably heard this before, but there are a number of phonetic variations such as Serchwell,Sarchwell,Searchwell in Devon. The ones available online seem to be from Plymouth but perhaps these are the only ones commonly transcribed or available. Is your record from a micro fiche?

Roger

The Welsh connection looks promising but of course, until it is proved....

I found the Serkwetts on Find my Past.
