Hi Alan!
Thanks so much for that! It paints a nice picture of what life was like in the area and i'm looking fwd to visiting and taking a look around   :)
It's a shame there was no mention of the Armstrongs in John Hall's writings. Would be nice to find what type of people they were. The member of the family who branches off to my side of the family apparently left the farm in 1878/79 with a traveling girl and was disowned by the rest of them   :)

Cheers,
Rob

 Rob,

Bear in mind the advert from the Courant was 1720s, long before your Armstrongs were on the scene.

Going from similar adverts, I took it that Saward and Richmond were selling agents, able to explain/discuss the sale with potential buyers.

Hello Rob,
I'm a member of the various Armstrong 'Clan' organisations, plus currently working on the Armstrong Y-DNA project. There are a group of us who cover various hot-spots of Armstrong geography/history. Indeed, one of our group has vast info sources on Armstrongs in  Cumbria, with the understandable cross-over info on some of the Northumberland villages.
If interested, please PM me & I'll put you in touch with her.
Cheers
Bob

I was on line looking for my birth mother who is an Armstrong when I came across your post about Holmes farm, I did not know it had an Armstrong connection. As a young child I spent holidays there in the summer, picnics on a weekend at the waterfall and haytime fun. My “Grandpa Armstrong” lived in Allendale, the cottages behind the then Red Lion. Thanks for enlightening me, glad to know someone has a connection with the farm, I will keep looking for my Armstron connection.

This thread is so interesting. I have connections to this farm and at the moment I am looking for relatives of CLIFFORD ARMSTRONG born 1930 died 1959, mother’s maiden name ROBSON. Looking also for relatives of LIZZIE MAUGHAN who farmed the HOLMES farm with her husband Jack. As I don’t live in the U.K. looking up things is difficult. So far I have a mother who is an ARMSTRONG with  a uncle who is an ARMSTRONG all connected to this farm. Appreciate any help. A
