Job Legg - master brewer of Bridport
« on: Saturday 03 April 10 13:30 BST (UK) »
I'm doing some lightweight (ie: free!) museum research on the Legg family. It looks as though Job Legg held the reins of the family business during its heyday in the mid-late Victorian period, but I can't seem to find out that much about him.

Suppositions so far:
1. b.abt 1838, second child and eldest son, to Thomas & Elizabeth LEGG - father was a brewer; the family acquired what is now Palmers Brewery from the Gundrys (?) at some point.
2. Passed quietly through the 1851/1861 censuses at Allington Villa, Bridport, the family pile.
3. Acquired control of the business at some point - possibly on the death of his father in 1874.
4. Apparent master of Allington Villa in 1881, occupations listed as JP as well as brewer; featured in local documents as owner of many inns and pubs as well as other land; often involved in tenancy issues.
5. Sold the business to Palmers in 1890s.
6. d.1893

Is anyone able to put any more flesh on these bones? For instance, did he marry (I can find no conclusive records) or have children? When/why did he sell out to Palmers, or did it happen after his death?

I sense that the 1881 census record may offer some of the answers.

Suz,
Thanks for that - I gave up on the familysearch site when I couldn't find my own relations some while back. Clearly it would have been worth a try on this occasion.
