« on: Friday 16 April 10 07:52 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me anything about Woodland Park in Newport?

There seem to be the remains of a house there but I cant find anything when I google. Im sure I ready that  house used to stand there years ago.

All info gratefully received. Thanks very much.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

There is a Woodland Road and a Woodland Park Road in Newport. At the junction of these two roads, is a park. Its now called Woodland Park but I understand that a house use to stand there. I was told yesterday that it suffered bomb damage during the war. I would to like to find out the name of the house and who lived there. I would also like to know if there was any kind of graveyard or mausoleum on the land.

Thanks very much

Hi
I can see that in 1901 there is no woodland Park but woodland rd, its not untill 1911 that you see woodland park. Have you looked up the 1911 census this would give you all the numbers and you can check against what was there and what is there. It sounds as if you visit this area. I am sorry I now nothing else about the area. A visit to Newport library may help they might have a map of the area.
cheers cardiff  ;)

Thanks Cardiff, I appreciate your response.

I have done some more digging and discovered some information. You might like to know that the house that stood there was called Gaerwood House and was hit by a bomb during the second world war. It was so damaged it had to be demolished.  The owner of the house, a solicitor by the name of Alfred Searle, and his housekeeper were missing and presumed to have died in the blast.

I will certainly look it up on the census though. It may give me more information about previous occupants.

Thanks so much. Enjoy the rest of the weekend sunshine  :)

chepstowgirl,

Mercer & Crocker's Directory for Mon, Herefs 1876 has two references to Gaerwood House

a. Jones, Daniel, Gaerwood House (under "Clergy and Gentry")
b. Jones D & Co, ship brokers, 88 Dock Street - Private address Gaerwood House (under "Commercial")

You can find and search this document under 'historical directories'

regards

You must visit Shaun McGuires brilliant site that lists all Newport's war dead - civilians and those in service.  It lists Alfred Searle and there is a photo of the memorial to him and his housekeeper on the site of Gaerwood House.

Hopefully this link will work:  http://www.newportsdead.shaunmcguire.co.uk/

Thanks for your comments denben, this link will take you to the exact page where Alfred Searle's details are listed.
I should have added the photo's to the main "Memorial's"  page which I will now do.
