« on: Saturday 17 April 10 19:28 BST (UK) »
Hi All  :)

I am interested in trying to find more information about a John Smith that i have found on the 1871 Scottish census,
Born 1847 he is a Private in Glasgow Infantry Barracks

Is it possible to see more info on this chap anywhere or this all i can get?

He is the one born in England.  Which kind of makes life difficult - it does not say where in England.

Which regiment was he in?  That has to be your line of research, so that maybe you can ascertain where he came from and is therefore the person you seek.

I think you may need to look at the original image(s) for the 1871 census for this information.  Unfortunately since this is Scotland, I'm not actually sure how you get to see the description of the enumeration district to check this out.  :-\

You could then try looking for a John Smith's discharge papers on the National Archives site for details of his service.  However, that could still be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Do any further census indicate that he was ex-army?  Where were his children born?

No nothing indicates that he was in the army, in the census's before 1871 he is in Bedminster with his family and in 1881 he is in Darfield Yorkshire  married and with kids he marries in Darfield and kids born Darfield.

My Great Uncle left a written summary of his family tree and he mentions that on living home John Smith went to Scotland and then it goes on to say he completed service in the army and as i cannot find him in 1871 thought this chap looks hopeful ???

I have found him on every other census, but why did he have to have a name like John Smith ::)

That's ok.  I thought it might be a long shot :-\    but always worth asking, as you never know.

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to read this  ;D
