Hi Dalybabe,

You may find something on this site to point you in the right direction:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/pathways/localhistory/gallery4/prisons.htm

Another alternative, more difficult if you haven't got any dates to work by, is local newspapers which may have a record of the trial.   They are usually available in the nearest library.

Good luck.

Hello Dalybabe,
Recently, Living TV's smash-hit series 'Most Haunted' visited 'Bodmin Gaol'. Prior to their paranormal investigation at the Gaol they did allot of research into the Gaol's history and it's inmates, in an effort to cooborate factual information with the information that their spiritualist medium comes out with on-location. You may wish to contact Living TV as a last resort perhaps, and inquire about the sources that the Most Haunted researchers used. They may be able to point you in the right direction.

Good luck with your research!!

Ryan.

Hi Dalybabe,

Where are you ? I live about 4 miles from Bodmin so I may be able to help if you are along way away.

There may be something in the libraray but it will only be general stuff I would have thought. The other option is the Cornwall Record Office which is in Truro.

Contact me if you think I could help it sounds fascinating.

Best wishes  Sue    :)

hi sue,
its dalybabes mum krissy, i have only just seen your reply re visit to bodmin gaol so if the offer still stands it would be great we are in s wales and cant get to bodmin it also seems we cant get info any where, so who knows you may get lucky! ;)
amelia jane harding was in bodmin gaol in 1901, we have no idea why although she was reported to be a bit of a girl , she was then saved by the sisters of mercy in lostwithiel and was put to work in a laundry , why again we dont know she eventually ended up in plymouth but that was around 1909 so she must have been up to no good to spend so long in cornwall, its a mystery that we would love to solve so would really appreciate anything you can find though i wont hold my breath as we have hit brick wall after brick wall but thankyou for looking
hope to hear from you soon

I would contact the Cornwall Record Office to see if they hold the records - either prison records or court records - maybe petty sessions, quarter sessions, etc - I am not sure if the later sessions records have been indexed or not.  The earlier quarter sessions are on www.a2a.org.uk, but only to the 1830s or so.

There might also be records for St. Faith's.

"Paul Penrose; indicted for embezzling money, property of William Richard Sobey, when his servant on 12 July: hard labour, 1 month. 19 October 1875."

I found this in
 http://crocat.cornwall.gov.uk/DServe/dserve.exe?dsqIni=Dserve.ini&dsqApp=Archive&dsqCmd=Show.tcl&dsqDb=Catalog&dsqPos=5&dsqSearch=((text)='paul%20penrose')

Bodmin Gaol may have followed. Cornwall Quarter Sessions in Cornwall Record Office records.
