Death or Burial Records for Jersey
« on: Friday 25 March 05 08:44 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have access to death or burial records for St. Helier's,  Jersey?

In 1851 St. Helier's census:
George Cooke May, age 60, Proprietor of Houses, b. Eng.
Harriot             "  , age 58, Landed?? Proprietor, b. Eng., Blind

This couple could not be found in 1861 census.

St. Alphage, Greenwich, Kent -
12 Aug 1810 George Cooke May married Harriot Allen.

I have not found birth/bapt. records for either George Cooke May or Harriot Allen.

Thanks,
Susan41

Susan -

Have you looked for them in the 1841 Channel Islands census ?
- it's online at  http://members.shaw.ca/jerseymaid/index.html
If you know their address from 1851 it might help to find them.

I will see if I can find their deaths next time I call into the Jersey Archives.

Thanks Mike,

I double checked the 1841 census link and they were not listed. Previously they had lived in Greenwich and Gothenburg, Sweden.

Only son, Robert May, is said to have lived at St. Malo, Brittany in 1847 and Granville, Normandy after 1852.

I believe George and Harriet were deceased by 1862 as all the remaining family members removed to Prince Edward Island in 1862.

Susan -

The family certainly seem to have moved around a bit!

I have looked up the index of death records in Jersey Archive (Aug 1850 - Dec 1861).  The references are:

George Cooke May:  May 1860 - Dec 1861  Vol.14  page 82;

and there are two possibilities for Harriet -
Harriet May:  Sept 1854 - Dec 1855  Vol.10  page 87
Harriet Jane May : Jun 1857 - Dec 1858  Vol.12  page 21.

For the exact details, you need to request a copy of the register from -

R.J. Kerley, The Superintendent Registrar, 10 Royal Square, St. Helier, Jersey JE2 4WA.
Telephone (01534) 502335. Office Hours 9.30 a.m.to 12.30 p.m.

As you know the references above, he will charge £10 per certificate. (I understand that if searching is required, a further charge of £7 is levied for a five year search for a birth or death and £14 for a five year search for a marriage).

Add a postal handling charge of £1.00 for overseas and 50 pence for British Isles. Please make cheques payable to "Treasurer of States".

Hope this is useful.
