BOCOCK Ancestors in Lincolnshire
« on: Monday 19 July 04 13:04 BST (UK) »
My BOCOCK ancestors in Lincolnshire include ;

ELSIE, b Scunthorpe 1917.
ROBERT  ALFRED, b  North Cockerington 1891.
ALFRED,  b Irby-upon-Humber 1859.
ROBERT, b Rothwell, christened there JAN 1835.
WILLIAM, christened Cuxwold FEB 1807.
JAMES, christened Irby-upon-Humber JUL 1784.
WILLIAM b c 1755.

This last WILLIAM married Mary Gunnell at Irby-upon-Humber on 6 MAY 1777.
Their children were ;

JOHN (Chr. Hawersby cum Beesby 1777),
WILLIAM (Chr. Irby 1779)
ROBERT (Chr. Irby 1781)
JAMES (Chr. Irby 1784).

The eldest William was living at Irby-upon-Humber at the time of the 1841 Census (HO 107/638 4 Irb.-u-H 37/4) where he is described as an 85 years old agricultural labourer).  William died the following year and was buried on 20 AUG 1842 at Irby-upon-Humber.

1.Does anyone feel they may be related to any of my Bocock ancestors?
If so, I have more information to share.

2. Does anyone know when and where WILLIAM BOCOCK was born, and who his parents were ?

Hi,

No connection to your Bocock's I'm afraid, but I notice that you are researching the surname KIRK in Cottingham.

I have a direct ancestor JOHN KIRK, baptised April 11th 1802 in Cottingham, Hull - his parents were JAMES KIRK and FRANCES BRIGGS who married in Cottingham May 6th 1793.

Sometime prior to 1851 John and several of his brothers moved to the Newport/New Village area of East Yorkshire.

Any connections?

Regards,
Sasha.

Dear Sasha,

Thanks for contacting me.

I can't immediately see a link but I'd like to explore the possibility.

At about the time your direct-line ancestor John Kirk was born, my (Gt. X4) Grandparents, Robert Kirke and his wife Dinah (nee Gray) were bringing up a family in Cottingham and, by co-incidence had a son John, christened at Cottingham on 14 JULY 1800.

If there is a link, it must obviously come at some earlier stage.

Robert Kirke had himself been baptised at Cottingham on 5 FEB 1767 (IGI   C106642), the son of Henry Kirke and Jane (nee Browne).  I am not aware that Henry and Jane had any other children but that does not mean that they didn't.  Do you know the parents of your James Kirk ?

Henry Kirke was also baptised at Cottingham, on 23 MAY 1741 the son of James Kirke.  I don't know James' wife but a James Kirk married an Ellin Acham on 24 JUNE 1740, the year before Henry was baptised.

A James Kirke had been Christened at Cottingham on 04 JAN 1714, the son of Henry Kirke, but I have not yet confirmed that this is my James Kirke.

Can you see any links ?

Best Wishes,
Geoff Bartholomew.

Hi Geoff,

Thanks for the reply.

I'm not 100% sure of the parents of my James Kirk, but I strongly suspect that he is the James baptised June 18th 1752 at Cottingham, son of James Kirk.

James' wife Frances Briggs was baptised at North Newbald on May 26th 1771 (I have her as a 79 year old widow on the 1851 census at New Village).  Initially I thought that the age gap between them was perhaps too big.  However I have a copy of two draft wills of James Kirk, one dated 1810 and the other dated 1822.  In both he is very clear on the fact that his wife inherits everything for the term of her natural life or as long as she remains a widow.  If she remarries everything reverts to his children.  It is very tempting to read it as an older man worried that his much younger wife will remarry and have a new family after his death.

His address in 1810 was Lawnes, Cottingham, and in 1822 New Village.  He mentions 4 acres of land in Cottingham called 'the Firth' and a farm in Wallingfen which he jointly occupies with his nephew William Kirk.

I wonder if your Henry Kirke's father James could also be the father of my James Kirk?  Do you know of any further children of your James Kirke?

Be interested to hear your view.

Best wishes,
Sasha.

Hi......My Great Grand Mother's name was Keziah Bocock, (nee Bates) from Staffordshire and married to Thomas Bocock from Butterwick. Thomas was born in 1861, his Father's name was John Tranfield Bocock born 1836 in East Butterwick, married to Sarah Kirgarth, born 1833 in Fillingham. Any connections??
Kind Regards,

I am researching Robinson Bocock c1859 son of Wm & Elizabeth Ann nee Simpson married in 1848 Caister district. Cannot find a Wm c 1823 born in Rothwell, suspect it does link up with your line but need to find the gap.

Trying to find out who was father of Wm c1823 and go from there.

Regards Avril

James BococK

This could have been their marriage

Marriages Jun 1873
Bocock    William        Louth    7a   1292
Medcalf    John         Louth    7a   1292
Smith    Betsy Ann         Louth    7a   1292
Smith    Mary Ann         Louth    7a   1292

26 June 1873 at Binbrook. St Mary
William BOCOCK (20, son of Robert) to Betsy Ann SMITH (19, dau of Thomas)

The 1861 census suggests that William was from Irby upon Humber, son of Robert and Fanny.
Betsy Ann was born Binbrook, daughter of Thomas and Ann.
