Looking for an old address in Carleton (in Craven)

Hi I am hoping someone can please help.

In 1881 I have a family living at Smith Houses in Carleton - I just wondered if anyone knew where that is or was please.

As far as I know Carleton (Craven) is near Skipton, (just off A629).

I know where Carleton is - its the specific address I am looking for -  5 Smith House(s) - or just Smith House(s).  It doesn't appear on the modern google maps - and I am curious as to where it is

I am having great difficulty finding anything on modern maps and I cannot find an old map as yet. However I did notice that not far from Smiths Houses was Dale House. There is a mention of a planned study of this house on this website if you contact them they may well be able to help you.

If not, for anyone else looking other places mentioned were in order Slingsby Houses, Dale House, Beckside West, Beckside Terrace and Beckside Farm. The farm if it is the same one is on a modern google map.

Sorry cannot be exact with the location, but I'll keep looking, something may crop up.

I believe from doing searches in the 1861 upto and including the 1911 for the address and the surrounding area the  property you are after is probably now on Google under the name of Smithy Hill, Beckside, Carleton there is even a street view.

1881 Census – 5 apparent blocks of 5 dwellings following on from Vicar’s Row in the Census return. Named:

                        Whiteoaks Build
                         Ellison Row
                        Thornton Houses
                        Smiths Houses
                        Slingsby Houses.

Abstract of Title for 5 cottages in West View refers to purchase of land by William Slingsby and John Slingsby in 1860 and the subsequent sale of the land to the company William and John Slingsby in 1892.

John Whiteoak claims Chapel Street built by Joseph Whiteoak.

Joseph Whiteoak’s work book contains a section on rents collected from 5 properties. The names correspond to those named for Whiteoaks Build in the 1881 Census.

Therefore it is suggested that these dwellings are now:

            East side of Chapel Street – Whiteoaks Build
            West side of Chapel Street – Ellison Row
            East side of George Street – Thornton Houses
            West side of George Street – Smiths Houses
            West View – Slingsby Houses.
