Census 1850-1880: Non-population schedules
« on: Tuesday 27 April 10 04:50 BST (UK) »
The non-population schedules for the 1850 to 1880 censuses for several states have been put on Ancestry.  So far the states are:

California, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia and Washington Territory.

Not all schedules are available for each state.

The industrial/manufacturing schedule is very interesting if you have an ancestor who owned a business.

For example, I found ggg uncle Joshua’s carriage making shop in Boston in 1880.  He had an investment of $2000; employed up to 13 people, all males over 16 years old; usually 10 men full time at $2.25/day for a skilled worker and $1.50 for unskilled; he paid out $5,400/year in wages; he had $5,000 of materials on hand and $13,000 of carriages.

There are also agricultural schedules for some states which give the details of land, crops and livestock.  And there are social schedules that detail schools, libraries, cemeteries, churches, trade organizations, clubs, newspapers, jails, etc.  And there is a special schedule for the “dependent, defective and delinquent classes.
