Bo'ness cemetery look up - MILNE
« on: Friday 30 April 10 07:57 BST (UK) »
HI

I am looking for Alexander MILNE and his wife Sarah SWAN. Alexander died around 1800. He was an accountant/solicitor to the Carron Iron Works in 1763. I am struggling to find ANY details about him and was wondering if perhaps he could be buried in the cemetery at Bo'ness as I found a reference to 'Alexander Milne of Carriden'.

Anyone andy ideas?

Thanks
Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth

I took a look at Bo’ness and Carriden burials.  Here’s what I came up with:

Bo’ness Graveyard Inscriptions pre-1855 – Church Wynd Lower Burial Ground:

Andrew MILNE late merchant died 17/10/1817 aged 87, wife Mary LEARMONTH died 27/11/1832 aged 72, son James died 4/1/1825 aged 24, plus 4 infants.

Bo’ness Parish Burials pre-1855 – 12 Milne’s listed.  Also one Miln – all lived in Bo’ness

John MILN died 10/11/1769, son of Alexander MILN, Workman

MILNE (no forename) died 16/3/1811 aged 86, widow

Andrew MILNE died 23/10/1817 aged 71

Anna MILNE died 4/9/1783, dau of Andrew MILNE, Merchant

James MILNE died 29/1/1825

Janet MILNE died 1/7/1770, dau of Andrew MILNE, Mariner

Jean MILNE died 3/1/1770, dau of David MILNE, Excise Officer

Johanna MILNE died 13/12/1781, dau of David MILNE, Gauger

Margaret MILNE died 26/10/1775,  “    “       “         “            “

John Morton MILNE died 20/9/1824 aged 1

Margaret MILNE died 27/3/1812 aged 79

Margaret MILNE died 21/12/1833 aged 5

Wm. MILNE died 8/11/1817 aged 25

Only other MILNE I found was at Livingston Burial Ground

Henry MILNE died 1872 aged 72 and wife Mary RUSSELL died 1835 aged 35

No sign of your Alexander though there may be relations here.

I checked out Linlithgow too but no sign there either.  He could have been buried in Grangemouth or Falkirk.

Good luck with your searching

Best wishes

Diana

Hi everyone,

Not much help, but your ancestor Alexander wouldn't be buried in a cemetery (most of which weren't established until around 1880), he'd be in a Churchyard.

Also, if the family continued to live in or around the Carron Iron Works where Alexander worked, (Larbert), perhaps he's in one of the Larbert Churchyards or even Bothkennar?

Very little in the way of records exist for burials this early and even if you were to find a record (most likely the purchase of a mortcloth rather than a burial record), there may be no surviving stone.

Anne

Hello Elizabeth.  I have information on Alexander Milne who married Sarah Swan mid 1700's and was a lawyer with The Great Carron Ironworks. They had three children, one being Lt. William Milne circa 1763-1826. Please contact me.   Garry Milne.
