Crocker / Leat - Jersey Marriage
« on: Friday 30 April 10 14:49 BST (UK) »
Hello, I'm wondering if anyone can help me please.

I'm trying to find out the first name of my ggrandfather, any other information after that would be a real bonus.

I'm assuming the marriage would of taken place between 1911-12?

Maiden name: Emily Clara CROCKER b. 1889 St Helier Jersey
(parents: Elias & Mary Crocker - I don't know Mary's maiden name)

Husbands surname: LEAT

In the 1911 census preview, Emily is still listed as Crocker, residing in St Helier. I know Emily & Mr Leat had 3 daughters: Violet b. abt 1912?, Doreen b. 1913 & Adeline b. 1915.

Thank you very much.

Hello Jas68

Being as you know that they had children, best bet would be to get one of the birth cert's

Take a look at this site, there are a lot of Leats and Crockers, including Doreen (who seems to have married a Lock). Her date of birth was 8/8/1913.

PS Certificates from Jersey cost £20 so best to ask here first as we can go and look at them and make notes - no charge

Thank you so much for all the replies, you've given me yet another piece of the puzzle (suvil).

Jersey Heritage Trust site is where I started on my tree after I gathered as many memories as I could from my family. Wonderful site but at the moment I'm stuck working out where they all fit in to my tree! Both my parents & most of their family were born in Jersey, how could they leave such a beautiful place.

Crocker side of the tree is doing very well but not only am I stuck on Leat, I am also stuck on Lock.

Doreen Leat / Lock (born 8/8/13) was my Grandmother. I can't find any information on my Grandfather (Doreen's husband), his name should be Albert (aka Bert) Harold Lock. Not sure if he was born in Jersey or Guernsey. They had 3 sons (Bertie b. pre 1937 died 1970's?, David b. 1937? died in his early 20's, William/Godfrey 1938-09) and a daughter (V) who is still living in Jersey.

My Granfather was in the Royal Navy. He died & was buried in Jersey (early 70's?), both he and his eldest 2 sons had already passed away prior to my first visit to Jersey in 1979.

Thank you very much, I really appreciate your help.

A few bits to be going on with, a trip to look at certificates should yield more.

Emily Clara Crocker was married in St Helier between 1907 and 1913. The entry is on page 79 and there is a George John Leat on the same page, so I think that must be your Great Grandfather.

George John Leat appears to have been born in St Helier in 1876 but shows in the 1881 as being at Haut de la Garenne, an orphanage in Grouville. In 1891 he is an 'inmate' at the General Hospital, which in fact means that he was living in the Workhouse.

Have you seen the trees on Ancestry that feature Elias's father, Solomon? According to a couple of them Solomon died in Australia, which is possible as I can't find him after 1871.  Luckily Elias's youngest sister Louisa was born in St Helier and her baptism shows that their mother's name was Elizabeth Bree.

I should be able to find out more in the next week or so

You are certainly keeping me busy, thank you so much.

I haven't been able to confirm where Solomon disappeared to, I think the trees that I have come across that mentioned Solomon died in Australia hadn't noted that he was ever in the Channel Islands. Solomon's brother & family did immigrate to Australia, I located the passenger lists plus records & burial details but nothing yet to suggest Solomon went there. I have a feeling that it might have been assumed that Solomon went to Australia (instead of Guernsey). Will keep searching.

I have found a Salomon Crocker entry, 1882 Jersey general hospital register and also a possible match for his wife Elizabeth 1891 in St Ouen as a servant, although there is another Elizabeth Crocker born around the same year... but I cannot find their youngest child Lousia after 1871. I might check in Wales, their eldest son went there.

I felt quite sad hearing that George Leat was an orphan, so happy that you found him though. There was a William H Leat (age 7) in 1881 Jersey Industrial School for Boys St Martins Parish, I'm wondering if he may have been George's brother? In 1891 he is noted as a relative of a family in St Helier with the surname of Iselin.

I best get busy, will pop in again soon. Again, a big big thank you.

Here are the dtails from Doreen Leat's marriage certificate

At St Mary and St Peter's Roman Catholic Church 28/8/1933

Albert Harold Lock, aged 24, Bachelor, Occupation Seaman in the Royal Navy, living in St Helier, born in St Sampson, Guernsey. Father William John Lock, Plumber
to
Doreen Elizabeth Leat, aged 21, Spinster, no occupation, living and born in St Helier. Father George John Leat, Barman.

Witnesses George Henry Lock and Violet Mary Leat.

As Albert Lock was born in Guernsey I'm afraid I can't help you with him as I don't have access to Guernsey records.

Doreen's parents were as you know George John Leat and Emma Clara Crocker. They married in St Helier on 29/10/1911, he was 35 and she was 22. His father was William Henry Leat and hers was Elias Francis Crocker. The witnesses were Elias Crocker and William Leat.

Looking at the census records and IGI William Henry Leat was born in Ringwood, Hampshire in 1811,  the son of John Leat and Charlotte Charlton Smith. This makes him 64 when George John was born. I have looked at George's birth certificate and he was born 22/12/1875 at Seale Street, the son of William Leat and Emily Slader. They seem to have had at least 2 other children, Mary Jane born in 1871 and William. Given their father's age it is perhaps not so surprising that the boys were in the orphanage by 1881, Mary Jane was living with her Aunt, Ann Touzel, William's sister although Emily is still alive. I will have a look at the orphanage admission records next week and see if they shed any more light.

The family that William H Leat is living with in 1891 has the surname Joslin - the Ancestry transcribers weren't too good with Jersey names!

I'm sure all the Leats on the Jersey census records must slot together.

I'm back at the Archive next Tues so I'll do a bit more digging then.
