Caclelyd, Ffestiniog
« on: Saturday 01 May 10 16:02 BST (UK) »
I am researching my great grandfather Samuel Evans (b 1853) who was recorded on the 1891 census for Merioneth as age 39 and living at what is transcribed as "Caclelyd" in the Civil Parish of Ffestiniog (Page 12).  As far as I can ascertain, there is no such word as Caclelyd, but a look at the original suggests that it is possibly on the basis of "Cae**lyd" - I cannot make out any more as the writing is rather indistinct.
Can anyone throw any light on what this may be?  Grateful for any help/suggestions.

Hi

The description page has it as Caeclyd. I think it's been written as CaeClyd

Here's a modern map where it is spelled as Cae Clyd:

Cae, of course,  means field. But I've just checked on the meaning of clyd and it is given as meaning warm, sheltered, snug or cosy  :)

Hi Gadget - that solves it! Another look at the original shows that it is definitely Caeclyd.  One has to respect the guys who wrote all this up in the first place but the handwriting was not always of the best, and a smudgy quill did not help!  Many thanks for your help.
