Thomas Finlayson b 1888
« on: Sunday 02 May 10 21:34 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to trace Thomas Finlayson born 13 jun 1888 in Midlothian, his parents were Dixon Finlayson and Christina Gilchrist.  According to some information received Thomas was a Footballer for Hearts of Midlothian (hearts) before he died on either 1909, 1912 or 1913, not sure which date is correct.

Any information on him as a footballer or his death would be very helpful.

I think he married but again he died young so not sure.

Thanks

Looks like he died in 1909 - certificate available (pay-per-view) on ScotlandsPeople.

If the death was unexpected and unexpained then I would expect there to be no cause of death shown on the index entry/certificate that you can see, but there would be an associated entry in the RCE (Register of Corrected Entries) which would probably give the cause of death after the Fatal Accident enquiry had taken place.  The RCE is linked to the original image and should be available online.

Nobody of that name ever played a first team match for Hearts.

However, there was a Thomas Finlayson who played for Leith Athletic in the 1907/08 season, so I suppose it is possible that he transferred to another team but did not make a first team appearance before his untimely death.

Hi, Thomas Finlayson was my great grandmothers 1st husband. He played for Leith Athletic not Hearts, he died very young due to injuries sustained whilst working down the coal pit. His wife was Selina Kate Gilles nee Reid. Hope this helps.
Kirsty.

September, 1909.

Deceased was putting a loaded tub on to the carriage when the middle finger of his left hand was crushed between the tub and side of carriage : blood poisoning set in and he died fifteen days later.

It's in here.....scroll down to September.  He's listed as Thomas Finlay Sen, but I imagine that's an error.
