Cross-written letter *COMPLETED*thankyou all. see last post
« on: Monday 03 May 10 16:13 BST (UK) »
"COMPLETED" (see my final post)Photo attached
I have an undated letter written from my ggrandfather Thomas James Leggett of Sedgeford, Norfolk (a Miller and Baker), to his fiance/wife Rachel Binks. I have been unable to read more than a few words because it is cross-written. Are there any tricks to overcome this? I have tried covering below the line I am trying to read.
Even better, is there someone who could translate for me?
Part of the letter is attached. I could email a high resolution image, or post a print.

Cornwall - Jenkin, Buckingham, Frayn.  Cambridgeshire - Johnson, Preston, Marshall.
Somerset - Watts, Budgett, King.  Norfolk - Leggett, Binks, Spooner.

I have tried changing the contrast, solarising etc in Paint Shop & can see the first sentence. I will work on it further!!

I've never seen this before - so neat it's almost geometric - and unreadable!

I'll have a go too

I am sure there is a word for this kind of writing but [senior moment?] can't thinkof it.

Here goes [so far]

"Friday evening
My dear Rachel
I looked out for a line
from you this morning but I suppose you
did not get mine so early as I posted it
at the palace on Wednesday. I was then off
to ?hear the concert. You can't guess my girl
what I ? ? way I thought of you"

Now my brain aches so will try some more tomorrow. And you say this is only PART of the letter? Hmmmmm....

This writing is incredible.  I think he must have used a ruler.
I find it easiest to read enlarged to about 200%, with the line I'm reading just slightly above eye-level.

So I've had a go, but there's missing bits, and my eyeballs are screaming "basta"  -- I'll have to come back to it again if someone can give it a bump.  It gets intriguing on the second page....  Maybe there's bits you can fill in from context/family history, Eleanor?

What an incredible letter.
Fascinating to see an example of something I had read about  mentioned in a Georgette Heyer novel .
A way of sending a long letter to save on postal charges.,Something amounting to 6p. per sheet. Quite expensive for those days.

Wouldn't teeny tiny writing have been a better solution?

Yes Errato, that is probably what we would do, but this method does seem to have been the accepted way ..(only from what I have read, however)

Could be that other letters were sent in miniscule writing..sadly I don't have any examples !!
