1871 Census details please - Benjamin & Catherine EYLES
« on: Wednesday 05 May 10 17:10 BST (UK) »
Good afternoon,

I would be very grateful if anyone would be kind enough to look up the 1871 Census details for the follwing household:

Benjamin EYLES b. Patrick Brompton (or Hunton) 1837   Occ: Station Master
Catherine (wife née LAYFIELD) b. Kirkby Fleetham 1840

By 1871 they should have 3 or 4 children:
- John Thomas b. Raskelf 1863
- Maria b. Stokesley 1865
- Anne b. Kirkby Fleetham 1867
- A.N.Other ???

The couple were married in Finghall 1862. Being a Station Master Benjamin may very well have been transferred around. In the 1881 Census the family are to be found in Newby Wiske.

At some stage the family must have emigrated to Canada as deaths are recorded in New Westminster B.C.

If the 1891 Census could be checked to see if they are still in the UK, that would be a bonus.

Many thanks for any help.

Nick

Can't see them on England 1891 census.
looks like Benjamin at least was on the 1891 census of Canada - no sign of Catherine though.
I don't have subscription to Ancestry so can't tell you any more, sorry

Good evening Annie,

Many thanks for checking the 1891 Census. In fact I am trying to find out what happened to Catherine EYLES, who figures in the 1881 Census at Newby Wiske.

Benjamin and several children emigrated to Canada I estimate c1884, (one of his daughters was married there in 1885) and he figures in the 1891 Canadian Census as a widower.

I can find no trace of a death for Catherine in the UK between 1881 and 1884, and none either in British Columbia where the family ended up. Unless she emigrated but died between Quebec and B.C. ? It remains a mystery for the moment.

Thanks for your time and trouble,

Nick

Are you sure she didn't go to Canada as well? There is a Catherine Eyles & Benjamin Eyles on the Canadian passenger list 1865-1935 going to Quebec - but as I say I don't have a sub. to Ancestry so can't see any more

there are a few public trees on A which put the emigration date as 1883 and her death at 1890 but I cannot vouch for accuracy of course as I also do not have that particular sub.

Thank you both for your comments and suggestions.

The short answer is, no, I'm not sure whether she went to Canada or not.

If Catherine appears on a passenger list bound for Quebec - I'd love to know which one - then she must have died in Canada somewhere. Where did you find the information Annie ?

To date I haven't been able to find a trace of a death in British Columbia, where the family seem to have settled, and my attempt at the Quebec records hasn't revealed anything yet either.

I shall try and find my way round the problem via different contacts.

Thank you anyway for your time on this one.

Nick

If you do a search  on Ancestry for Catherine Eyels, b 1840 then where it says 'narrow by category', choose Immigration & Emigration, then Passenger Lists, then Canadian Passenger Lists 1865-1935 and there are 15 results, and all except 1 have the surname Eyles.
You need a subscription to view the details though, or you can Pay per View
