1870s Germany to Hull & Liverpool

My great grandfather named Johann Nicklas fought for Germany against France in the war of 1870, and was one of the army that marched into Paris in 1871. Immediately after this war he and his brothers left Germany and sailed to England where they settled in Hull and Liverpool. He became a naturalised British Subject and married a local girl in Liverpool in March 1878. I have been told that he and his 4 brothers may have come from Baden Wurttemburg but cannot progress any further in this search, or find confirmation of the place in Germany. Does anyone have any idea how I can progress?

Is it your tree on Ancestry? If not there is one that gives a Johann Jacob Nicklas born abt 1850 in Reichenbach Bavaria.

You might want to change the heading of this to 1870

Hello Manick,

I think your subject title might be putting people off - shouldn't it read 1870's not 1970's?

Have you found Johann on any census?  Did he anglicise his name to John?

The Family Search pilot site has a number of German baptisms listed for the name Nicklas, some from Wurttemburg - might be worth a look - http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=allCollections&r=1

Thanks all, yes it should be 1870s of course.
My family trees are on Ancestry as well as Genes Reunited, but I'm coming up against a brick wall. He's on the Census of 1881 in Wavertree Liverpool, and further census in Golborne. I have his marriage certificate and he's anglicised not only his name, but his father's (John Nicklas, clerk). The 1881 census is the only one which mentions a place of birth (Reichenbach, Germany). There are several places of that name. Military Archives in Munich need his unit before searching.
I'm reluctant to give up!

Don't give up. I'd been searching for ages for German relatives and couldn't find any leads. Recently I made contact with a third cousin who was also searching. By chance she found a paper amongst her late father's belongings that gave a name and a date and through that we were able to get back another 3 generations in Germany. You never know what will suddenly turn up, especially as more and more data is coming on line.

There are about 50 places called Reichenbach in Germany, 10 in Bavaria. As they are all small towns and villages it would be helpful to know the name of a larger town nearby.

Who knows? I have them too, and thought I was getting somewhere (parents Johannes Nicklas & Margaretha Muth), however if you keep checking, 4 of them died when children. I'm starting at the other end now, by checking the 1881 & 1891 census, then going back to familysearch to see if there are shared parents. No joy so far though.
As for Reichenbach, the family have a newspaper cutting from 1915 where he says he's from Bavaria, so that pins it down a bit.

Could they have been cousins? There are Jakob Nicklas  and Elizabeth Muth who have boys at the same time.
