JEM (or JOHN) MEMERY m Annie Andrews
« on: Tuesday 11 May 10 08:18 BST (UK) »
My grandmother's sister Annie married Jem Memery about 1900 in Dublin, lived in Pigeon House Road, Ringsend, 8 kids.  1911 they were in Pembroke Cottages, Pembroke East. Any one know who he was? All we know, he was a sailor.

Is this the family on the 1911 census - Memery family ?

If so John is away from home at the time. The form states they were married  about 19 years (so c1892) and have 9 living children..

Thom's 1914 directory of Dublin lists two separate sets of Pembrooke Cottages  in 1914 - one on Pigeon House Road, Ringsend and the others off Cambridge Rd, which is also in the same area. Pembroke East is the electoral district which covers the area.

Yes, that's right. I worked out he must be at sea. We have no idea who his family was, although there are some Memerys around but just in Dublin, and a few (mostly seamen) in coastal towns in England at the time.

There's a possible match for their marriage around the right time on the Civil Index. It's under the name James - I would think Jem could be a nickname for this.

 Name: James Memery
 Registration District: Dublin South
 Event Type: Marriage
Quarter and Year: Apr - Jun 1891
 Volume Number: 2 / Page Number: 577

 Name: Annie Andrews
 [same index details]

See the topic 2 Minute Introduction to Irish Records for details on the index, ordering certs etc

Hey, that's great! What a quick response. The guide to Irish records chould be useful - I've been finding a great black hole in the family there. Thanks.

Forgot to mention that Dublin South is the registration district where Ringsend is located, so that marriage reference fits the area they later lived.

Hopefully John/Jem will be listed at home on the 1901 Irish census when that's released later this year.

p.s. I dont know if you seen this - another Memery in Dublin with an occupation of sailor : Robert Memery

Waiting for the 1901 Census!! (Bet it crashes at first!)
Yes, one of their sons is Bob, maybe him, will check. I have found others but connections are difficult.
They had: Bill, Jim, Bob, Arthur, Harry, Fred, Frances and Rebecca; and we have my Uncle Fred's memoirs of some of them.

I's say that Robert is more likely a brother - he married before John & Annie.

There's only about 40 Memery listings on the census for all Ireland - so the chances are that some of them are connected. Especially as this Robert lives so close to Annie on the census.

You could be right, but how to prove it.
The 1901 census may reveal all..... maybe
