West Somerset Yeomanry
« on: Sunday 04 April 10 22:53 BST (UK) »
Hello

I have started work on a new project which is about producing nominal roll of former members of the West Somerset Yeomanry with short biographies.

If you have any information about former members please do let me know.

With best wishes

Asher Pirt

Hi Asher

How far back in the WSY history are you going ?

I think the CRO at Taunton holds the regiment records, hopefully the new county museum in taunton will also cover the regt.

Cheers

Pete.

Hello Pete

I am trying to go back as far possible. There is a slight dispute on the actual formation of West Somerset Yeomanry. However, in my project, I have decided to attempt to trace former members back to 1794. As far as I am concerned following the Great War, the Regiment disappeared into the Royal Field Artillery and I have no intention to continue the study beyond 1920.

The objective of the project is to identify a former member and find out more about the individual through various records in Taunton and Kew in order to produce a short biography for each entry. For Officers and those who were awarded decorations for service there is more information out there in school Archives and other resources.

So far I have mainly concentrated on WW1. I have not included members of the 12th Batt (WSY) SLI unless they first served in the WSY. I shall be working through the Medal Rolls of the Boer War. Hopefully, later in the summer, I might have time to go through newspapers to gather more former members and biographical information of the 'earlier years'.

I am hoping to gain support from more relatives of former members as crucial biographical information might be hidden in private papers.

Many thanks for taking an interest in the project

With best wishes

Asher

I have certainly come across some whilst researching the Poole family in Cannington/Bridgwater, I will dig out the details I have.

Cheers

Pete

You will probably find willing help on the Great War Forum:

if you have not already tried.

GHQ Liaison Regiment had a very important role in the whole operation and this often forgotten by some historians. Hope you enjoy the read.
