Kirton - Nottinghamshire or Lincolnshire?
« on: Sunday 27 March 05 04:29 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,
My Rollitt family seems to be based in Lincolnshire but I have found a John & Ann Rollitt and family in Kirton, Nottinghamshire, whereas I can't find a John and Ann Rollitt in Lincolnshire.  I looked up Genuki and found three Kirtons in all.
Can anyone with local knowledge tell me if they are close together and could be confused?
Thanks DelB

Hi Mabel,
I wish I could claim this family you so kindly found, but my John Rollitt is definitely born in Leadenham 1770.  I thought he may have been working in Nottingham.
Looks like I keep hunting!
Many thanks for your time.

Hiya, as an almost local I can suggest you look at Kirton-in-Lindsey, between Gainsborough and Scunthorpe on the A159.  The area is VERY close to Notts, I have just found out my grandmother was born Notts, East Retford, which is before Gainsboro.  The boundaries there are fluid over time between Lincs, Notts, Humberside, North Lincs...Hope this helps, Jen

Hi Jen,
That does help thanks.  I get very confused about boundary changes over time and I'm sure local knowledge beats maps anytime!
Gainsborough certainly has Rollitts so that's my first lead.
Thanks Jen.

There is a Rollitt lineage in the Leadenham/Navenby area of Lincoln tracing back to the first John Rollitt (c1720-1768) who married Hannah Hales (c1705-1778). There has been a succession of "John Rollitt"s or combinations of John; my own father was John Edward (1909-1997), his brother James John whose son (living in Cherry Willingham, Lincoln), and I am Michael John....
There is no trace of an "Ann", others who have married into the Lincoln "Rollitts" include Mary Robinson (c1730-1800), Elizabeth Woolfitt (C1771-1803), Elizabeth Purcell (c1854-1920), Laura Beckett (1885-1969) - my grandmother, and Majorie Duke (1913-1999) - my mother.
There is also an unrelated (as far as I know) Rollitt family in Newark, just on the Lincoln/Nottingham border.

Hi there,
It seems from your information that we may be connected.  After much searching and a kind person finding John Rollitt in the 1861 census in Lincoln I was able to trace his family.
In the 1861 census:
24 Broadgate Lincoln 2105/384
John Rollitt 80 Carpenter b. Leadenham
Ann Rollitt 63 b. Langton
William Rollitt Ashton gson 7 b. Lincoln

This is confirmed as my family by the grandson William Rollitt Ashton, as my great grandmother Mary Ann Rollitt married William Ashton around 1843, then Andrew Binns in 1860 and William R. was her eldest child.

I have since been in contact with Adrian in the USA whose family also goes back to John Rawlet (Rollitt) and Hannah Hales and have been able to trace my John R. to father William Rollitt and mother Ellen (Jekyll).

I would love to find out more about your family.  My e-mail is deleted
I will also contact Adrian with this information if you don't mind as it helps fill in a much bigger picture of the family.

Thank you so much for this exciting information,
Cheers, Del Barraclough

Hi all

Just to put in my two penn'orth!! I am reserching the Worksop lot which seem to have originated in the Doncaster area (Helmpsall?) with John Rollitt who married Martha late 1830s, and was a stone mason in Worksop, and may have been the origin of John Rollitt builders.

Anything further on this lot would be useful and gratefully received.

Thanks
