SMITH Family
« on: Wednesday 19 May 10 07:53 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on the Smith Family . So far this is what I have :

The Smith family of the early 18th Century lived in St. Pancras, Westminister in London . Adam and Mary Smith raised nine children of whom Charles and Caroline’s son Edmund James would achieve prominence in the business world as the founder member of the firm ‘Smith Gore’ as well as appointments to various positions by the Crown .

The fifth child of eleven born to Edmund James and Margaret Smith, Arthur Frederick Smith born 13th May 1853 received his schooling at Harrow and Wellington College and in 1872 entered Trinity College Cambridge, before moving to Downing College in 1874 . The son of renowned ‘Crown Receiver for the Northern Counties’ and ‘Surveyor to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners’ and founder partner in 1847 of ‘Smith Gore’ (property consulting and management) , Arthur Frederick however did not enter into the family business and instead emigrated to South Africa in 1880 where he settled in Kimberley .

Hi Kevin

You seem to have been quite thorough in your research so far.

Is there anything specifically we can help you with at this time so that Rootschatters do not spend their free time duplicating what you might already have?

Regards

Hi Kevin

You haven't updated your profile so we don't know where in the world you are.

Have you been to the City of Westminster Archives and tried to find the baptisms you make reference to?

From freebmd

Marriages Sept 1/4 1846

Smith, Edmund James, York 23, 638

Margaret Noble also has the same reference

You can purchase the marriage cert from the GRO (www.gro.gov.uk) for £9.25 which will give you the exact date.

Hi Dawn
Many thanks for the info .
I have someone in Uk doing searches for me and will hopefully have the info within the next 2-3 weeks --- Smith not being too easy .
Once info all in i will remove the posting(s) .
I notice on a number of profiles that location (and other info) is not entered -- is it mandatory as I would rather not have all my details published .

Regards
Kevin

Hi Kevin

It is not mandatory but does help others point you in a direction. (we're not asking for full details just a location)

If we know you live out of London, or out of the UK, eg New Zealand, it is potentially a waste of time suggesting a visit to the archives in London.

Hi

On Edward James's baptism Charles was a linen draper

St George Hanover Square 7th December 1816
Edward James Smith parents Charles and Caroline, Conduit Street, father's occupation linen draper

Charles gives his birth place as St James Westminster Square on the 1851 census (the IGI gives sister Sophia's baptism at that church in the following year) which makes this Prerogative Court of Canterbury will a possibility for Charles' father - always difficult to be sure because of the commoness of the Smith surname.

Will of Adam Smith, Linen Draper of Saint James Westminster , Middlesex 21 March 1796 PROB 11/1273
