Alexandre Mathe
« on: Thursday 20 May 10 06:01 BST (UK) »
Just hoping someone here might be able to help.  Trying to find any information of Alexandre Mathe born about 1763 in Jersey.  He arrived in Canada we're not quite sure when.  He married Marie Jeanne Benoit (of Nova Scotia) around 1790 in Arachiat, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada.  He died before 1800 in Tracadie, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada.
We are not sure if they were exiles from Acadia or not.   We are not even sure if there is a record of his birth.  This family line around the 1840's changed their name to Mattie on the creation of Mattie Settlement, Nova Scotia.   Hopefully someone might have more information for us.
Thank You
Valerie Mattie

To update.. I ran into a post of another genealogical board that Alexandre Mathe may have been born on Guernsey Island.  Still looking for a birth record as I am trying to find out who his parents were.  Hopefully someone can find the time to seach it out for us.
Again Thank You
Valerie Mattie

Hi

Just to confirm that there were no Mathe baptisms in Jersey around this time.

Thank You for taking the time to look for me.  Seems to be more mysterious then I first thought.  Hopefully some day we'll learn the story.
Valerie

Hi Valerie,

I was wondering if you've since found any info on Alexandre Mathe?  I'm stuck at this point in my family tree as well.  My father is a Mattie :)

I haven't found anything more since my initial research.  Seems like we hit a dead end.  We're trying to find out if they were original Acadians who were deported in the middle of the 1700's or if Alexandre was the first to arrive via the Jersey Fishermen.  That being said we don't know any of his ancestry at all.  I still keep doing limited research on the internet and maybe someday we'll learn the mystery, if not enjoy it for what it is ...  a mystery!
I'm a Mattie by marriage myself.

Thanks for replying.  If I find anything I'll let you know :).  I've just started my research so I'll keep digging :)
If you ever want to compare notes, feel free to email me at (*) :)  Maybe we can fill in some blanks for each other.  My grandfather was Alphonse Leo Mattie son of John Norman Mattie and Catherine Sophira DeCoste :)
