James Simpson...how to find him?
« on: Friday 28 May 10 15:56 BST (UK) »
Hello All!

I was hoping someone may be able to help me with an area I am stuck on!!!

James Simpson born approx. 1855 in Scotland, immigrated to Ireland where he married Elizabeth Odgers in 1876. In the 1911 Ireland census James is listed as being born in Scotland, as opposed to his wife who was born in Ireland.

I sent away for the couples marriage certificate and I now know that James father's name is William Simpson and his occupation was listed as a cattle dealer.

My problem is I have no information about WHERE in Scotland James was born, or his family lived, and there are many MANY James Simpson born to William Simpson...and I can't figure out how to narrow my options down.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated!

thanks again!
Torrie

Hi, I went on freecen & there's only 2 William Simpson's who were cattle dealers in 1841. One of them is aged 40, in Argyllshire. The other, age 25, is in Aberdeenshire,in the parish of Udny. In 1851 he's the only one (of the censuses transcribed in freecen) & still in Udny parish, single & aged 38. Have you tried to trace James in the 1861 & 71 censuses? Would the whole family have emigrated to Ireland?

Hi,

Did it say on the marriage cert whether Jame's father was alive or deceased at the time of the marriage.

I did a search on the 1871 census and this was the only William Simpson coming up as a cattle dealer.

William Simpson head age 56  Cattle Dealer  brn Forgue, Aberdeenshire

John Simpson  son  age 12  brn Rhynie, Aberdeenshire

Isabella Lindsay  servant age 39 housekeeper  brn Auchindoir, Aberdeenshire

Living at Old Tullochbeg Bar, Huntly, Aberdeenshire

Reg Num 202, ED10, Line 9

I then looked this family up on the 1861 and there was a son James..brn about 1852.

William Simpson  head  age 46  Toll Keeper, brn Forgue , Aberdeenshire

William Simpson son  age 22  brn Kinneathner, Aberdeenshire

James Simpson  son age 9  brn Kinneathner, Aberdeenshire

Ann Simpson  daugh  age 6  brn Kinneathner , Aberdeenshire

John Simpson  son  age 3  brn Rhynie, Aberdeenshire

Isabella Lyndsay  servant  age 35  Domestic Servant brn Auchindoir, Aberdeenshire

They were living at Tollhouse, Auchairn, Cairnie, Aberdeenshire

Reg Num 178, ED3, Household schedule 35, Line 14

Do any of these names match what your James called his children? These are transcriptions so some of the names , spellings etc could be wrong. There is a possibility the son William on the above census was 12 , not 22.

Hello all!

Thank you for your help!

On the marriage certificate William Simpson was neither listed as alive or deceased simply his name and occupation as a Cattle dealer in 1876 when the marriage occurred.

I do know that James named his children the following

Annie
Louisa
James
Albert Henry
William Christian
John William
Victoria
Mary Elizabeth
Robert

Several of these names matches his siblings listed in above posts.

I was wondering if I had access to his death record would it list both parents names? I don't know when he died But as he was alive in the 1911 census it would have been after 1911 in Ireland.

As always thank you for your help!

Torrie

Hi Torrie

If he died in Ireland, like English death certs., his parents' names would not normally be included unfortunately.

as said before I dont think parents names will be on the certificate but do you know where in Ireland they were living in 1911?
If so you could search for his death cert on the IFHF website, they have death records for some Irish counties up to 1920 so he might be on there and at least you would have his death date then and the  possibility of some more information.

They were in Malahide, Co.Dublin in 1911-

Index to Irish civil registrations is also online free but many possiblities for a James Simpson died Co.Dublin after 1911 (and as mentioned earlier, Irish death certificate do not list parents- or birthplaces, birthdates, name of children or spouse (unless informant)-

His 1901 census entries only shows Scotland for place of birth again.
