Mansfield Street school Ardwick Green
« on: Tuesday 01 June 10 11:07 BST (UK) »
Hi I am trying to trace anyone that may have been a pupil at Mansfield Street school Ardwick Green during the late 1940's and 1950's.

I am especially interested in knowing how I could trace school reports or locate pictures of the school. Can anyone help me?

Also, does anyone know where I can find pictures of Corel street in Manchester. I am aware it no longer exists in Ardwick Green, juts one building survives.

Also does anyone have any details on the Rucklands Pub again in Ardwick Green?

Thanks everyone...

I found pictures of the school on the Local Images website; if you just search on the one word Mansfield you get Medlock Secondary School, Mansfield St.  And an earlier pic from 1909, where its called Mansfield St Municipal Day School.

On some photos Mansfield St is referred to as 'Chorlton on Medlock' but its the same place as the Ardwick one.

Have found from experience that searching the image collection with just a single word gets you better results!  ::)

Hi Barbara,

yes I had searched for all those words and found the images in question. However I was hoping for more information on the school and whether it was possible to get access to school reports etc.

Hello again Dave  :)

Have you found this site yet on Ardwick history?
http://manchesterhistory.net/ardwick/CENTRAL/phase4b.html

has a section on Mansfield St school during WW2. All sorts of stuff in that site, but I'm finding it hard to negotiate from one bit to another! See what you can find, there is something about evacuees from Ardwick going to a school in Nelson

And this pdf on school records at Manchester Library
http://www.manchester.gov.uk/downloads/download/176/school_records_guide

Its possible that the Mansfield St records have been put together with one of the Ardwick schools listed in that pdf, following amalgamations and so on.

Manchester Library will have a mile-long queue of rootschatters waiting outside when it reopens I think   ;D

WOW! Excellent post...lost for words.

Would these records have school registers and reports?

No idea I'm afraid.. I suspect that what got saved was a bit hit-and-miss, especially when schools merged and acquired new names.  Inspectors probably had a system for their overall school reports, but pupil records, it might depend on whether the headteacher thought them worth keeping. Best email the library when they reopen for more detailed contents listing.

Off topic slightly, but one of our local primary schools will be closing this year, and I fear for the old registers, which are kept in a box in a cupboard, in the girls toilets ::) They go back at least to WW2 and haven't been archived (a box in the loo doesn't count!), so its entirely possible that the old Mansfield St registers are still languishing in a modern-day Ardwick school somewhere. Hope not though
