ELPHICKS in Sussex
« on: Thursday 20 May 04 14:25 BST (UK) »
Thanks Chris - here goes!!

I have a Madeline Lily Elphick that was born 1890/91 (maybe the March quarter of 1891) whose father was Henry.  She married a Walter William Green on February 14, 1920 in Steyning (living on St. Leonards Avenue).  Witnesses to the marriage were Frederick Victor Elphick and Louisa Edith Elphick (possibly nee Coussens).

Shortly after the marriage they moved to Bushey, Watford, Hertfordshire because their daughter, Joyce Marjorie Green was born there in October 1920 and a son, Leslie Frank in August 1923

I would really like to find some information out about Madeline but can't seem to find her on any of the census' available on the net

Anything you can do would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks - Judy

Hi there Judy

If Madeline married in Steyning, its odds on that this was the place of her birth, but girls usually went home to have the first baby – which in this case was Bushey, Herts
So not really sure where she was born?

Looking on the 1901 census for Sussex
There are 591 people in Sussex with the surname Elphick.
There are 10 Henry Elphick, but no one in Steyning.
There are no Madeline Elphicks at all
There are no Frederic Victors either.

Got to figure out where to go next?

There is a birth for Madeline Lily Elphick, born in Peckham, Camberwell Surrey Jan 1901; father Frederick Victor j. Elphick (born Udimore Sussex 1867) , green grocers assistant, mother Olive (born Tonbridge Kent), sister Ethel. They are listed on the 1891 (Camberwell) and 1901 (Portsmouth) census returns. In 1901, Frederick's wife is listed as Edith (coussens) and they have another child Frederick aged 2 born Southsea, Hampshire.  Sister Ethel is not listed. Frederick is working as a sewing machine agent. By 1911, Lily is employed as a domestic servant working for the Lidgate family at 110 Holland Park Avenue, Nottinghill. In 1911, Ethel Elphick is living in Hove, Sussex with her children Frederick 13, John 8, Florence 5, George 1. She is listed as 'head', married for 16 years (1895), 5 children of which 4 survived. There is a death listed for Frederick V J Elphick in 1946, Hastings (age 78).

Sorry the above should say,  re 1911 census...'Edith' Elphick is living with her children...not 'Ethel'. Typo!
