What happened to: John BROWN & David BROWN ?
« on: Thursday 03 June 10 12:40 BST (UK) »
John Brown (babt 1821 Selkirk) was my gg grandfather and David (b 25/11/1862 Selkirk) one of his children.
John appeared on the 1861 census but not the 1871.
David did not appear on the 1871 census either.
The last child born to this family was in 1868 and therefore John went missing between 1867 and 1871.  There was a John Brown who died 2/1/1869 at the Combination Poorhouse, Galashiels but attempts to find out any details of this person have been unsuccessful. (Date of death, age of person are about right).
As far as David goes, I cannot find any death record though Scotlands People and a search of Selkirk cemeteries has been fruitless.
The wife/mother (Mary Renwick d 18/1/1890)'s grave site has been located in Selkirk.
I would really appreciate any help or suggestions. (before I give up!)
Thanks,   Bill.

Hi Bill!
I have a John Brown on my tree born around 1820. I don't know much about him but he had a son called William. My John had a wife called Mary but I think she was Mary Renwick. I don't know where they were from but they are my grandfather's family and he was from Selkirk.
A bit vague but if you think there could be a connection I'l  go into it.

mary brown is listed as widowed on the 1871 census
IGI has thomas renwick born 7th sept. 1867 selkirk selkirk
with only mother listed - mary renwick or brown
would this birth cert. give any clues about john brown  :-\

Hi Susan,
Sorry, but a different family of Browns.  Thanks anyway.

Hi Ev

I had Thomas born Selkirk abt 1868 and a search on Scotlands People for a couple of years either side has failed to locate any trace of his birth.   Bit frustrating!

Cheers,   Bill

Hi again Ev
I should have read your message more carefully.  I have located the birth of Thomas Renwick, illegitimate son of Mary Brown (Renwick) born 7/9/1867.  Would probably then assume that husband John was not on the scene in 1867 and therefore went missing between 1862 (birth of another son) and 1867.
The other son, John, is still a mystery but you have helped me add a bit more to the story.
Funny thing is that, in the past month or so I have located the gg grandson of Thomas Renwick/Brown and only last week received a 10 page letter of thanks from him for filling him in on his family history.  I can now write back with a bit of gossip concerning his gg grandparents ;).
Thanks for your help.
Cheers,  Bill

Bill  :)

also mary brown born 14th jan 1865 yarrow selkirkshire parents john brown &
mary renwick(IGI) , mary(age 6) with the family on the 1871 census
this would seem to indicate that john brown senior was still part of the family
until at least march 1864

Possibly emigrated?

I note there is a Brown family in Leicester in 1881, the David is the right age but the father there (also called John) would have to be a son of the John  born about 1821 for it to fit.

Do the details you have so far all come from Birth, Marriage and Death certificates?
