(Weight of roof cracked walls so that body of church had to be rebuilt in 1846.)

Architect, probably of Galway, active in the 1830s. On 12 March 1837 Timothy Murray of Galway wrote to Martin Blake, MP for Galway, recommending that his friend 'John Semple, the architect' should be chosen to design a store which Blake was building in the town. Semple had already supplied Blake with a drawing for the building.(1) Possibly the same John Semple who was a building contractor in Galway in the early 1860s.

Staggering - but thanks for all this Kalilileth!

I’m not really sure what to make of it though – I had no idea that there were several John Semple architects/builders around the same time in Dublin!  This is a huge list of works.  As you say, it would not be surprising to find a link with Galway John Semple. 

My older relations in the family were able to give me quite a lot of information to start our family history but they knew very little about the Semples, which is why I started this thread in 2010.  I know a lot more now thanks to everyone’s help on this site, but I’ve still not found a record of Jane Semple’s birth, nor her death (as Jane Parker), nor the relationship with Joseph Semple, which led to her being married in Joseph Semple’s house, Nile Lodge, in 1876. 

I remain optimistic though - given how much more information is available now than when I started.

I've just found this record, which was only posted in Sept 2016:

This gives Jane's birth year as 1847 and the date of her death as July 1927, in Ballinrobe. 

There doesn't seem to be a civil record though, so it's difficult to confirm, but this could be the grave of Edward Staunton's and Mary Newton's mother.  She may have been living with Cecil and Mary Newton, who lived at a chemist's shop in Bridge Street, Ballinrobe.  She had originally been living with my grandfather and family in Ballaghaderreen, but my grandfather died in 1925 and his family was split up at that stage.

Just in case this helps anyone else who was looking for the links between members of the Semple family in Galway, I've attached an extract from a lengthy obituary for Austin Semple, who died in July 1910, aged 91.  It’s from the Galway Express on 16th July 1910 and it mentions that Austin was the survivor of four brothers - John Semple (builder), Joseph Semple of Nile Lodge, and Richard Semple (merchant).
 
I was looking for the link between my great grandmother, who’s maiden name was Jane Semple and who’s father was John Semple, a builder, and Joseph Semple.  This was because in 1876 Jane Semple married my great grandfather, Edward Patrick Staunton, at Nile Lodge, which was owned by Joseph Semple.  I couldn’t find any records to explain in what way they were related, but this answers that question.
