Dublin 1920s Photo
« on: Saturday 05 June 10 15:58 BST (UK) »
Wondering if anyone can help though some light on a Dublin photo we have from my grandad. There are nine people, politicians (Cumann na nGaedhael), a priest, a bishop, and two army men.

Their names are written on the back but I cant read three of them clearly. I've included a section of the photo and a scan of the names.

Any ideas on the missing names, the approx date, and the reason why these people were all photographed together ?

My guess as to the timeframe is some time between the beginning of 1922 and August that year - based on Arthur Griffith being present (he died in August) and Paddy Hogan being in the photo as he was minister for Land and Agriculture from 1922.

thanks,

Shane

p.s the other names are Paddy Hogan, Ignatius O'Neill, Kevin O'Higgins, Arthur Griffith, Dr. Fogarty (Bishop of Killaloe) & Sean Mac Eoin

Update - people confirmed :  A = Cannon William [O']Kennedy, B = Sean Milroy T.D.

Perhaps something to do with an amnesty post IRA uprising?
Sinn Féin party?

If it's the same fellows...
Dr. Fogarty Bishop of Killaloe often critical of the actions of the I.R.A. was associated with the moderate section of the Sinn Fein party and Dail Eireann.

Ignatius O'Neill - IRA Comdt

Kevin O'Higgins was assassinated by the IRA in 1927 - was Free State Minister for Justice.

I think a) Cannon (should be Canon) Kennedy
            b) Sean Milroy
            c) Michael Breanna (possibly should be Brennan)

thanks for the suggestions...I'll have a look for the names you mentioned to see if anything further shows up.

Three of the people in the photo are easily recognizable and I have the usual details on them - Arthur Griffith, Kevin O'Higgins and Paddy Hogan. I believe the Dr. (bishop) Fogarty is the one who gave interviews to newspapers on various topics such as the Rising & the death of Michael Collins etc.

All I've found out on the others so far is that Ignatius O'Neill was involved in the War of Independence (Rineen ambush 1920) and that Sean Mac Eoin was a senior officer in the Free state army (he and Michael Brennan are in uniform in the photo), and he also seconded Arthur Griffith's motion in the Dail that the Treaty be accepted.

I've no idea who he is yet but for some reason the person labeled 'B' (Sean Miley/Milroy..) looks like an interesting and important character ..

his surname looked a bit like Miley to me .. never thought of Milroy as a surname
