Many thanks for this. I am trying to find out my grandmother's name. My father was Clark Hunter dob 1921 son of Peter Hunter. I know that his mother died when he was very young about 5 I think. Her names was maybe Agnes Grant or Ogilivry, don't know when they were married. My grandfather did remarry but no detail;s of that either. If you could point me in the right direction !

Hi Laura

The best place for you to verify details is on the official pay to view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk which is the only source for BMDs and census images. For this period that you are looking at, you are able to look at the actual image off the register on line (£1.20 per image to search/view).

For example, there is a marriage showing in 1915 for a Peter Hunter and Agnes Grant in Paisley which looks a likely entry from what you have. There is also a death showing for an Agnes Grant/Hunter in Paisley in 1927. Also a marriage in 1928 for a Peter Hunter in Paisley which could well be the second marriage for Peter.

Scottish certificates are very informative and you should be able to verify all the details shown.

I bought some five gallon casks from them for making Port, many years ago. I don't think the cooperage still operates.    Skoosh.

Hi Laura,
My great grandmother was called Mary Wiiliamson (nee Hunter). She was the eldest daughter of Clark Hunter the founder of the cooperage. It was located behind St James's Avenue.
She was the eldest of eight children one of her  brothers was called Peter. When her Father died she took over the running of the Cooperage. Her son James Williamson also worked with her, but he sadly died during WW2. When my great grandmother died in 1958 she was succeeded by her grandson Alexander Williamson and two of her nephews Clark Hunter and John Hunter who subsequently bought out Alexander.
The cooperage was bought over by another company based in Edinburgh I think and no longer exists.

Ive friends who stayed in St James Avenue a while back and they reckon that St James Avenue used to be owned by Clark Hunter cooperage and that the houses were used by the managers / senior staff of the company before being sold off as the company declined.
