Castleford Cemetery - layout
« on: Tuesday 15 June 10 13:11 BST (UK) »
I wonder if there are any locals who might be able to point me in the right direction, please? I've found my husband's great grandfather buried in Castleford Cemetery, but so far unable to actually 'find' him.  I know he's in  plot 6398, but have no way of working out where this is.  There was no-one around to ask when I visited, just wonder if anyone knows the numbering system, or could maybe point me to a man that does?  Many thanks, Jacky

Have you tried the wakefield.gov.uk site. I have found a lot of info on that.

I did, John - that's where I got the plot number, but no layout plan, unfortunately.  Great site, isn't it!

Hi Jacky.

Which Castleford cemetery is your relative in - Whitwood, Healdfield new or Healdfield old ?

Going by the length of the number I'd guess at one of the Healdfield sites.

I believe Healdfield, but don't know which side - it's 1915, so I'm guessing could be either.

A 1915 burial would, I believe, be in the old cemetery. That's the one on the right at the end of Healdfield Road' the one where the cemetery office is located.

Unfortunately I only have a part-plan for the Whitwood cemetery. The office at Healdfield Road is very rarely open and the phone numbers for enquiries don't seem to be manned.

However, If you are fairly local to the area, a trip to the Bereavement Services office in Normanton will give you what you want.

WMDC's burials website is a great resource but getting a cemetery plan out of them is impossible. But the
Normanton office staff will give you a diagram of the part of the cemetery that you are interested in and they'll make sure you have the info you need. But you have to visit - a phonecall is no good, they'll just tell you to call in !

If you're not local to the area let me know. I'm on the doorstep, so to speak.

David, you're a star!!  That's exactly what I needed, and we're not too far away, so we'll have a toddle along there.  Thank you so much, that's brilliant!!

According to the Wakefield website, it looks like the Town Hall in Normanton? We'll pick a decent day and have a good old trawl round ;) Thanks again  :D
