Hi Mandy. How fabulous. You are most certainly related to my husband through his SMITON family!!
I would love to see what else you have on them...

We are in Australia? How about you?

I have a rough tree that I compiled last month - I have only been looking at the SMITONs for that long, as I got a lucky break when the 1901 census for Ireland came online.

George SMITON m ? Their son was Currens SMITON (died 1891)
John LITTLE m ? Their daughter was Mary Ann LITTLE

Currens and Mary Ann married on 9 Jan 1852.
I only had Sarah b.5 apr 1868, Jane Anne b. 1864, Stewart b. 1854, Currens b. 9 feb 1865

Jane Anne married John McKeown in 1892. In both censes they are living in Rough hill townland. Their son was Robert McKeown b.1897 (who married in Ireland and immigrated to Australia in 1925). He was my husbands great grandfather. So Currens Smiton was my husbands g.g.g. grandfather.

Look forward to your next post.

hi there.
my dad has a photo from about 1921 of lisnaweary school which has many smitons there.  my great auntie was able to name every child in the photo before she suffered with memory problems.  i will ask my dad for a copy so that i can scan it for you along with the names.  i can't remember off the top of my head which smitons were in it

Hi Mandy. The information for the Smiton family tree came from a school project on family history that I did in 1985 which helpfully coincided with a visit to Aunty Margaret in Belfast. Mum then got to see the parish registers in the church in Ballinsaggart (just outside Ballygawley) in 2001 whilst on another visit to Aunty Margaret and Aunty Sarah.
Mum had always said that Curren was a shortened version of Cornelius - but I've never actually found anything to back this up.
Liz

Thanks Liz!  I am looking into it all a bit more as dad has been digging out some old photos and bits and bobs to show Ben.  Don't really have any time to devote to it but would like to find out a bit more, its all very interesting.  hope you and the family are well x
