Dr Matthew (Matthias) GAUNT & Miss Frances GREEN
« on: Friday 18 June 10 15:30 BST (UK) »
Hello Hertford,
I am trying to flesh out the early years of Dr Matthew (Matthias) Gaunt, London - b. 1795 - where?

Matthias married Miss Frances Green, at Essendon, 1825 - which church?

I know Frances had a brother, Richard.

I know Frances and Richard's parents were Isaac and Frances. Don't know any more details.

Would like some clues to follow... Australia is a long way away, so it's difficult other than by the net. Cheers... Rose

Matthias married Miss Frances Green, at Essendon, 1825 - which church?

They married in the parish church in Essendon. At that date marriages all took place in the established church, the Church of England, other than Jews and Quakers who were the only non-conformists authorised to conduct marriages. See http://www.joinermarriageindex.com/pjoiner/genuki/HRT/parishes.html for details of Essendon.

What else do you know about Mathew Gaunt? Have you found him in any censuses? Or did he emigrate?

They appear to have baptised two children at St Giles Cripplegate, London, according to the IGI at www.familysearch.org, where he's shown as Matthias. On the baptisms of Sidney on 11 Oct 1826 and Frances on 3 Apr 1828,  Matthias is described as a surgeon  of Castle St.

Thank you, bedfordshire boy,
I did have the information on the marriage of Matthew Gaunt and Frances Green, at Essendon, from the hertsdirect.org site.

It was an exciting moment when this information revealed itself on the screen. From the information that the groom, Matthew (more commonly known in our records as Matthias, which causes a little confusion when searching for him), was from London, it was then I managed to unearth the two children's baptisms at St Giles Cripplegate, but so far not Jane nor the fourth child, possibly Francis(?).

The Australian (Tasmanian) archives note that Matthias and his wife Frances arrived here  in 1831 and they were accompanied by four children - Sydney (4), Frances (3), Jane (2) and Francis or Matthias noted as an infant. I'm inclined to lean towards the name Francis for the fourth child, as I would have imagined the first born son to have been named after his father.

I am delighted to see that you have given me just that little bit more information, that Matthias was described as a surgeon of Castle Street.

Once they'd landed here in Van Diemen's Land (as Tasmania was called in those days), they eventually doubled and more the size of their family.

Oh, and I should mention that Dr Gaunt built an Anglican Church (St Matthias) on the banks of the Tamar River here, at the place he named Windermere, in deference to the UK lake that carries this name. I will attempt to attach a photograph of the church.

Again, thank you for your assistance... Cheers... Rose

PS: Can't follow how to load a picture... sorry...

Just a couple more details from the baptisms. Sidney was born on 2 Sept 1826, and Frances on 25 Sept 1827

Thank you, bedfordshire boy, for the further information. I did have those birth dates and note Frances wasn't christened until several months later. I wonder why?... Rose

The Pilotsearch website has a couple of bits of info

Jane GAUNT, baptised at Aldersgate, London on 21 Jan 1829 - from a Non-conformist register

There was a Matthias GAUNT baptised at Denby in Yorkshire in 1796, father Joseph, but he might be the one marrying in Yorkshire in 1827, also to a Frances.

There are a number of single GAUNT women in London in the England census, all sisters by the look of it, born in the 1790s in Westminster. Might be sisters to Matthias.

Hi Ian,
Thank you for this new information. I now have something on early Jane Gaunt to follow. I would not have thought to look in a Non-conformist register. Jane died a spinster, in Tasmania in 1880.

The Matthias (Matthew) Gaunt who married Frances in Hertford is definitely my man.

Again, this assistance is much appreciated... Cheers... Rose

Hi Rose, - have you thought of linking (or combining if it can be done   :-\) this thread with the 'Essendon Marriage 1825' thread as they are about the same people  - it might make it easier for those interested to follow!   And if you like, you could put in a link to mine on the Aussie board.

I could, Wiggy, if I knew how... I've only stumbled into Rootschat recently and don't feel competent enough to attempt this suggestion!
