Hi Rebecca,

I would love to make contact with you - i have put a thread on the Aussie board asking for descendants of this couple - I am a great great granddaughter of Matthias, via Edward, Charles' brother.    Put up a couple more posts on the board and then you will be able to make contact via Personal messages (PM)  which you do by clicking on that little green scroll under the name of the person on the left hand side of the thread.    I am very anxious to make contact with other family members  around the place -

If you go to the Australian board and look on the second page you will find my post looking for contacts!  And it has a link back to this thread also!   " Searching for descendants of Dr Matthias Gaunt"

This is fantastic for you, Wiggy. At last your search (and your patience) appears to be paying off.

I'm glad you made contact, Rebecca, it could be the start of a whole new understanding of your important family history for you...

Great stuff... Rose

I have found Castle Street, Cripplegate, on an old map of 1765.  That's where the Matthias Gaunt lived when they were married
Please - does anyone have a map closer to the date of 1825 for this area - and if so please  could you tell me where St Giles is in relation to Castle Street.  (I have tried Googling for this info - without success - which doesn't mean it isn't there - just means I'm a bit slow in these matters!   ::)  :-\

Cheers,

Wiggy

Hi Wiggy,

I think if you google Greenwood Map of London 1827 will get you a map from 1827 that was drawn up from the 1824 survey, not sure if this particular map helps

I will try to put link here  ::) I am getting odd message when I try, so will be back shortly,

Back, but even when I shrink the link I still get strange message.

I think there's a copyright on the map  :-[ but I found it via google

I know this is Rose's thread - but we are working together so that's OK -  isn't it Rose??   ;)

Anyhow any further hints on where to turn would be very welcome!!

Matthias GAUNT hasn't shown up on any Navy lists to date - not that I've found anyway.   :-\   ::)

Wrote to Edinburgh Uni  - no records there,               }    the family story being that he trained

Wrote to  College of Surgeons Edinburgh -no record.  }    in Edinburgh and served in the Navy for

Just written to Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh }    short time before emigrating in 1831.

There is a reference to him going to South America (- presumably on a Naval vessel - haven't found any evidence of that yet either.      :'( )   before setting up in practice in London - We've found that!!   :D

Personal visit to Kew Archives was suggested by the AO - and if I didn't live at the other end of the world I probably would!!    ;D ;D

Rose has turned up reference to Mathias in parliamentary records connected with the anti-transportation league.  English parliament I do believe.   (they come from his time in Tasmania - it is before 1831 that we want to find out more about him.)

Any ideas about which haystack to search next???    ::)    ;D
