Samuel Ealing - 1841 and 1851 census help please
« on: Sunday 20 June 10 14:18 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to find Samuel Ealing in 1841 and 1851.  He was born circa 1781 (give or take a couple of years  ::) in Chertsey, Surrey.  I have a possible marriage for him in 1826 in Hampshire to Mary King but this is possibly a 2nd marriage.  He has a daughter, Elizabeth, born about 1828 in Basingstoke and I have her from 1861 to 1911.

Samuel's occupation was bargeman and he died in 1876, aged 95 in Basingstoke.

This is Samuel in 1861 and 1871:-

RG9/709/15 p 24

RG10/1235/67 p 2

In both cases, he was an inmate at the Basing Union Workhouse, status widow, occupation retired bargeman.

I am presuming I can't find him because he was sailing about on his barge.  Any help or advice very much appreciated.

Thanks for the christening information, Kerry  :D.

I have a few boatmen in other lines of my tree but in the North West.  This is the first time I've found one "down South" and I am really not familiar with the location of the canals in the Hampshire/Surrey areas.

Thank you so much Trish.  I have been struggling with this one for a while and getting no where.

Do you think this might be James Ealing in 1851 in Basing Union Workhouse?
HO107/1681/120 p 2.

I have been looking at this one on and off but never noticed James Ealing.  I suppose because I wasn't looking for him.  There is a James Morris b1817 on the same record.  Elizabeth Ealing married a James Morris in 1861 in Winchester although they started having children together in 1852.  I haven't been able to find either of them before the 1861 census.  James Morris was a sailor on his marriage certificate so he is another one who was probably sailing around in a boat instead of filling in the census  ::).  Also in the Workhouse are some Ballards too - some of the newly discovered in-laws maybe  ???.

Hi Luzuu,
Just posting this quickly but I think this is Jane in 1851, a Servant in the Herriott Household.
HO107/1681/545/5

Yes, I think the 1851 is James.
I will keep plodding away at this as the day goes on and time allows.
Thanks for the extra info re Elizabeth and will see if I can find anything on her too!

Trish :)

Re the possible 2nd Marriage in 1826.
Doesnt it say he is age 22??

Hi,

It looks like the marriage in 1826 isn't my Samuel.  I didn't know the record said he was only 22, I must have missed that crucial detail  ::).  My Samuel would have been in to his 40's as the later census records and his death indicate his birth c1781.  That is why I considered it as a possible 2nd marriage.

It would be brilliant if we could just find them in 1841.

Really appreciate your help.
