McLoughlins in Sligo
« on: Wednesday 30 June 10 17:31 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for any info on my great great grandparents.
Their names were Patrick McLoughlin ,1823-1877 and Maria  ? Ferguson/ ? Gaghan, 1830-1901. Both were born in Sligo and I believe they came over to England during the famine. They settled in Hull and had 10 children, Mary, Margaret , Jane, Patrick, Thomas, William, Charles, John, Julia and Catherine.
I know what happened to them from 1871 onwards, but can anyone tell me how I can get any info on their life in Ireland and their wedding and baptisms. ?
Any info or suggestions would be a great help.
Thanks

do you know where in county Sligo Patrick and Maria came from ?

Full Civil registration started in 1864, and for earlier records you will need to research parish records to see what is available for the area you are interested in. To do this you need to establish the family religion, and a location - i.e. parish, town or townland. See the topic : Introduction to Irish Records for more details.

p.s. were all the children born in Hull ?

I don't know where in Sligo they came from as on the census records that is all they put.I know they were Catholics as someone else on my tree has a baptism record. I have contacted the R.C. church where I think the children were baptised but I haven't had a reply.
There is some confusion over Maria's maiden name as one person has Gaghan on a baptism record and another person has Ferguson on a birth certificate. The census records have Hull as the childrens birth place but I have been unable to find my great grandfather Thomas McLoughlin's birth. Someone suggested to me that as the family had just arrived from Ireland they might not have realised they had to register births, this is why I contacted the R.C. church to check baptism records.

Hi topboy,

There are 8 Patrick McLoughlins born in Co. Sligo between 1818 and 1828

Three of those are in 1822.

Ill go a quick search and see if I can establish in what church they were recorded.

Might take some time, so Chat later

That should have been 7 topboy, sorry, and of those 7 I can only find 5.  All 5 are at Aghanagh RC church which is Ballinafad - 5 miles NW of Boyle, Co. Roscommon.

The 5 are:

Patrick McLaughlin 1822
Patrick McLoughlin 1822
Patrick McLoughlin 1824
Patrick McLoughlin 1824
Patrick McLoughlin 1818

I wouldnt put too much emphasis on the spelling - this wasnt an issue in those days!

Ill see if I can find a marriage record for both the names you mentioned..back soon ;D
