Ferry Landing, Ovington/Ovingham-completed, thank you
« on: Sunday 04 July 10 21:54 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find out why and when the wooden dwellings there were built and, in particular, who lived there in the 1920s.  Is there any local history publication about the area?  Can anyone help? ???

The toll bridge at Ovingham was opened in December 1883 so the ferry might still have been in use if it was cheaper than the toll. There was a booklet of photos called 'The Mid Tyne Villages of Northumberland' which has photos of Ovingham and Ovington but it doesn't have any of the ferry.

The 1860 (25") and 1897 (25") Ordnance Survey maps nicely show, firstly ford and ferry crossing of the Tyne, then ford and toll bridge ( with Toll House on the south-Prudhoe, bank, just north of Prudhoe Railway Station, built 1835)

You can see these on the
communities.northumberland.gov.uk   web site, in the Ordnance Maps section, of the Ovingham community. ( Older maps in PLANS section)
In the Photographs section, there are scenes of Ovingham buildings, the River Tyne and the Whittle Burn.

In the days when the main road Newcastle>< Carlisle went through Ovingham, there was an old toll bridge over the Whittle Burn.

Electoral Registers (not on line) will reveal who lived where in 1920s.
I think it is very likely that there exists local history publications for Ovingham.
Prudhoe Library will have or knowledge on appropriate publications

Thank you, Steve.  I will look out for the book.  The date of 1830 is interesting; I wonder if the toll was brought in as the railway line was built from Newcastle to Carlisle? :-\

Sorry Steve-I'm going dozy.  Don't know how I mixed up 1830 and 1883.  My only excuse is that the discovery of Ferry Landing has really caught my attention.
with best wishes

 Mr Tibbs,

The railway line Newcastle<>Carlisle, including Prudhoe St, opened 1835.

Toll Bridge, for road and pedestrian traffic opened nearly 50 yrs later.

Will do !

I'll try and confuse things- there were two toll bridges in Ovingham, very old one over the Whittle, newer one (1883) over the Tyne.

Web site www.geograph.org.uk  hold many modern photos, including old packbridge Ovingham and the 1883 bridge over the Tyne
