Just to complicate matters, here is another entry for marriage...

Thomas Batty to Susannah Hamson  1771   Ardsley, York   Familysearch Pilot  M07379-3  England VR  1545881   2.39RK1HP   (Ardsley, York comes up as Barnsley area??) could be that the entry is difficult to read so the transcriber has opted for what he/she thinks it could be. You would need to check the original entry for yourself.

Looking at census data for Levi it shows him as 40 in 1841 [appreciate the rounding down factor] and then 53 on the 1851 census. From his death cert [I have a copy] it shows him dying 27.07.1872 in Brind aged 74 which gives a birth year of 1798, as for place of birth I don't actually know. As you mentioned all these villages are close together ie walking distance, therefore I would dismiss Leonard b1799 in Dent as too far away.
Levi married Ellen Penrose [some people have her as Pearson] 1st Jan 1828 in Howden.

I have had a trawl through the familysearch.org site [didn't realise you could do it that way] and have confirmed with my data the following:
Levi was born to Thomas & Susannah [Hamson or Hampson] he was christened 09.08.1801 in Howden. He had 9 other brothers & sisters:
Ann 1781, Mary 1784, John 1786, Elizabeth 1787, Harriet [or Harriot] 1790, Jane 1793, William 1794, Thomas 1794 [a twin of William?], James 1796.

I have Thomas [father of Levi] b 1751 to Thomas b1733 & Mary Illinger [married 09.04.1751]. Thomas & Mary had another son James, I have nothing for him.

The level above this shows Thomas b1733 to Thomas [b1707] & Ann Throstle [1710-1750]

I am happy with most of the data I have ie upto Levi, it is before him that it gets a little confusing - mainly due to Thomas being a very common christian name.

When I go to the library I will also look at the Memorial Inscriptions for Howden Cemeteries, there is only 2, one is in the church grounds and the other is on Knedlington Road.
Brind came under Howden, but some folk from these outlying areas did get bap/marr/buried at Eastrington so will look that one up too.
Will let you know, hopefully going tomorrow.

Thanks for the info, as you can see Thomas was quite popular in the 1700s', linking Thomas's with wives is difficult.
I had come across quite a bit of the data but not all of it. A question - are there any earlier records for Howden?
One thing I have noticed in some family trees on the web is that they have a Thomas Batty passing away in 1731 - married to Anne Throstle the same year - and a family born after his death listed.
The plot thickens.

Thanks for all your detective work, I think I am going to have to draw this family out to try and get an idea of who is who. Keep you posted.

Good luck, I think there could have been two Thomas Batty in Asselby at same time????
Question ... if all the Thomas's sons belonged to one Thomas and they died, then your Thomas is from another family??
PM you with the MI now...

Parish Registers for the following are at Treasure House, Beverley, the East Riding Of Yorkshire Council Archives:-
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/CBW/ERY/Howden.html
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/CBW/ERY/Barmbyonthemarsh.html
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/CBW/ERY/Laxton.html
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ERY/Howden/index.html

I can only say that I have only seen the transcribed PR of Howden from 1700. It would mean a good day looking through the registers or microfiche at Beverley:-
