Mary Deegan--where was she on 1902 Shipping Arrival?
« on: Wednesday 07 July 10 23:02 BST (UK) »
Dear Rootschatters,

Hopefully, someone who has better eyes than I.  I seem to have much trouble in tracing my great grandmother Mary Deegan who supposedly arrives in America in 1902 according to the 1905 NYC (Kings-Brooklyn) Census I have.

She was from Dublin, Ireland and she was around 28 or 29 (possibly younger) when she came to this country.

I am hoping for any clue that I can use to track down her birth record in Ireland.

I do not know if she had any relatives in this country when she arrived here.

Your help would be gratefully received by me and would be much appreciated!

Kind regards,

Tees

Thanks, Isobelruss, for that arrival information!
Does it not say whom or where she is going to when she arrives in the USA?
Where did she arrives at? As in which port was it?
It seems that the information can be different from one arrival to other arrival. Wondering why.
Kind regards,
Tees

Hi Dettori28,

Thank you so much for this information!!

How unusual that she has a relative in Manhattan. And was it her first time to the USA? (Not sure if the shipping arrival would note this or not.)

It would be great if she had a brother that I can track down in the censuses and find who the parents are. But a sister is harder to follow in the censuses.

I tried IGI to see if I can come up with Theresa/Teresa Deegan---no records with the named parents that I have on Mary Deegan (from her NYC marriage record).

It is even harder to find her in 1901 Irish Census. Think she may be not from Dublin.

I would have to stop and re-think about how to find her in the birth civil records.

Many thanks for finding her in the arrival records!

Kind regards,

Tees

Hello Tees.

It is free to register on Ellis Island Records - the passenger list is readily available to view so you will be able to see or check the information yourself if you wish to do so.  It is always nice to have the sources and records for your family history and be able to verify the information  ;)

There's a Teresa Deegan b. Ireland on the 1900 Census in Manhattan with cousins, the Monaghan family.  The address is different than the one on Mary's passenger list, though.

If this Mary left from Queenstown she is probably not from Dublin.
