Wow! -thanks again. I looked on Directories at Findmypast but couldn't find anything. I think my cousin's tale of my greatgrandmother setting up the first telephone exchange in Gainsborough is a bit fanciful, but at last I've found there was something there.
I've been to look at this property and it doesn't look that big but obviously managed to house a shop, family home and telephone exchange.
Gainsborough Heritage society didn't seem to know any of this when I contacted them a good few years ago.
Do you think there would be any record of employees from this time?
