John Potts is living with them aged 11 on the 1841 census.  By the 1851 census I suspect he has become "son" John Cannon aged 21 and by the 1861 census he is John Cannon "lodger" aged 30 who is still living with them.

Mo

Hi Mo
Thanks for that do you have a place of birth for John Potts (Cannon) in 1841 and 1861 census's  the 1851 census has Keswick for place of birth for John Canon
But james's brother William also had a son called John and he was also down as being born at Keswick Cumberland and he was at the red lion at Grasmere in 1881 but his age didn't seem to match up and when Isabella died in 1880 he got left something in the will .

Hi,

Unfortunately the 1841 census only gives born in County or not born in County and in the 1861 it just states Cumberland n.k. (not known):

Butterbert?, Hutton i`th Hay, Grayrigg, Kendal, Westmorland

James Cannon, 50, Farmer, Born in County
Isabella Cannon, 45, Not born in County
James Potts, 11, Not born in County

Ages above 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 or 0.

1861
Borrowdale Head, Fawcett Forest, Grayrigg, Westmorland

James Cannan, Head, Mar, 72, Farmer, Westmorland Hutton
Isabella, Wife, Mar, 66,  Lancashire N.K. (not known)
John Cannan, Lodger, Mar, 30, Ag. Labourer, Cumberland n.k. (not known)
Rachell Cannan, Wife, Mar, 27, Westmorland Orton
Hannah Cannan, Daur, 6, Westmorland Whinfell
Isabella, Daur, 4, Westmorland Whinfell
Alice, Daur, 1, Westmorland Whinfell.

Regards,
Mo

Hi,

Just noticed that by the 1871 John Cannan (sic) aged 40 and wife Rachel and family are still living at Borrowdale Head, but by now he is a farmer of 70 acres.  It still justs says Cumberland though for his place of birth.

Regards,
Mo

thanks Mo
thats brilliant the 1871 fits in with our line of the family John Potts (Cannon) took over the farming chattels and goods and livestock on 12th May 1863.The 12th of may was traditionally known as grass day locally when cattle were let out onto grass from winter housing !!! .James died on 26th feb 1864.
It is interesting the Hutton in the Hay link with James as in 1851 James and Williams birthplace is down as Elterwater but brother Henry was definately in that area for part of his life.Johns wife Rachael was in the Lowther area  of westmorland in 1881 with some of the children but i think she was down as a widow.
I wonder where nephew John Cannon was at the 1841 to 1871 census is it possible he was in the Langdale or Grasmere areas as he was in contact with his Uncle Henry at Elterwater and he was working  at the Red Lion in Grasmere in 1881. He had a sister Elizabeth who married a Edward Atkinson she died at the age of 21 they had no family .

cheers David

Hi
Nephew John Cannon who was at Red Lion ,Grasmere 1881 his wife and daughter were at Bassenthwaite at the time
His father William C was buried at Hawkshead ,Lancs around  1859 william was born at Undermillbeck and christened at Windermere 19th aug 1781 his sister Mary Cannon was born at Calgarth  and christened Windermere 24th oct 1779.
Their parents were William and Elizabeth Cannon  who married at Grasmere on 20th may 1779 and both were from Clappersgate.
Elizabeths  maiden name was Hird she was daughter of John Hird of Fell Foot farm ,Little Langdale . christened 14th oct 1760 at Grasmere. Her husband William died at Tarn Hows near Hawkshead aged 82  Jan 5th 1832.
James Cannon married Isabella Cockerton at Hawkshead  june 9th 1832 she was born at Dalton in Furness.
I wonder if James had been married before as he would have been in his forties when he married Isabella
Ive had no luck in finding James's adopted son JOHN POTTS who it is said
was born in Cumberland in about 1830 apart from a record from Whitehaven that was down as the son of a Isabella Potts any help with a link with that  record would be much appriciated
