Gilbert, St Michael's, London
« on: Sunday 11 July 10 11:00 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find the birth of Benjamin Piers Gilbert in St Michael's, London in 1787.  Can anyone help me with where St Michael's is or would have been, and how to start looking for a baptism there. I'm finding London rather daunting. Thanks Louise.

looking at my Victorian London by Cliff Webb I see there are 12 St Michael Churches listed in the London area which includes South London,   none start as early as 1787, is it a church you are after or a district

Where did you get his date and place of birth from?

Does Benjamin appear on the 1851 census?

If you are referring to the City of London there are the following possibilities for 1787:

St Michael Bassishaw
St Michael Cornhill
St Michael Crooked Lane
St Michael Le Querne
St Michael Paternoster Royal
St Michael Queenhithe
St Michael Wood Street

There are also other St Michaels outside the City of London.

We, therefore, need some further details or information regarding the source of your information.

The place of birth came from his army records and said just ' St Michael's London'. Benjamin died in 1834 so is not in any census.  Louise.

Hi

This is the index to his army record

WO 97/52/94 BENJAMIN GILBERT Born ST MICHAELS, London and Middlesex Served in 6th Dragoons Discharged aged 31 1800-1818

WO 121/205/199  BENJAMIN GILBERT. Born [Not Known]. Served in 6th Dragoons. Discharged aged 31 after 18 years of service. Residence or place where pension paid stated in document. See film image 147.

Have you obtained copies of the records to see whether there is any more information?

The IGI sometimes known as Family Search remains the only London wide index (but imperfect with many parish registers not covered) pre 1813.

Thank you for that,

Yes I have looked into getting copies of Benjamin's records, but it looks like I will have to pay for research on the documents. Would anyone know how much this type of research is likely to cost?
Louise.

Hi

The documents are on microfilm - you can order copies directly from The National Archives on their website. They will count the pages involved and give you a quote for the copying. The records I believe also go up on Findmypast sometime this month so can be obtained there either through subscription or pay as you go credits.
