Moses Hartley
« on: Sunday 11 July 10 13:49 BST (UK) »
My 2x great grandfather was born in Oakworth, West Yorkshire in 1862.

He married Sarah Jane Sadler in 1896 in Keighley, West Yorkshire and all their children except the eldest were born in Southburn, East Yorkshire.  The first child was born in Keighley, West Yorkshire in 1897 and died in 1900 in the same area, two months after my great grandmother Mary Hartley was born.

His children were;

Joseph (1897-1900)
Mary (1900-1973)
Millicent (1902-1973)
James (1903-1959)
William (1907-1982)
Alice (1911-2004)

I am assuming he and his wife moved so he could find work in the area; he was a domestic gardener.

How do I find out more about him?  Thanks.

Do you have his fathers name?

Have you found him on the 1881 census - there is an entry with a birthplace of Admiregill Yorks which may be him

Hello,

Carole - don't think that's him the age is wrong.

Gibby, the marriage certificate would give you his father's name.
I am wondering if this is him- and if so he was married before.

Yes, I have researched the Hartley family back a few generations using IGI, I just have to check it all.

My Moses was the son of James Hartley who was born about 1834 in Trawden, Lancashire.  His wife was Ann Hartley (formerly Leach).

James Hartley married Ann Leach in the September quarter of 1856 in Keighley, West Yorkshire.  I have still to apply for his marriage certificate.

The children were;

John William (1857-1884)
Joseph (c1861)
Moses (1862-1916)
Mary Elizabeth (1865-1899)

I have Moses on all the census' right up to and including 1911.

On the 1901 census he is with his wife Sarah Jane and daughter Mary who until recently I thought was the eldest child until I discovered there was another child before her that is mentioned on the 1911 census.

It says 6 children born and 5 still living.

Hello again,

if you have the census information- what else are you trying to find out about him?

The missing child may have died in between the others and may not necessarily be the oldest child.

heywood

Just looked at your first message and you mention 6 children  ??? so you have that info.

I've already stated that the eldest child died and I have to follow that up.

What I'm trying to find out is why/when he might have gone to Southburn.

Before and after this time he is living in West Yorkshire.

I wonder if he just moved to find work or whether family events triggered the move.

Oh I see  :)

That wasn't very clear in your first post, nor was the post about the missing child.
I was trying to help you with the census information and the first marriage.

However, I understand what you mean now.

best wishes
