1860/70 Censuses

This is very much a long shot as I can't find Jane and family in the 1871 census in Scotland and wondered if they had emigrated.  I have also posted on USA

I am trying to find a Jane c1814, and her two sons Thomas c1849 and David Gordon c 1850 in the 1870 census.  The two sons were born in Kirkcudbright and Jane in Kelton. Scotland.

I have them in the 1851 Kirkcudbright, Scotland census where their father Thomas  is a Grocer/Spirit Merchant. There are also William, James and Elizabeth in the 1851.  Father died in 1852 and I have found Jane and son Thomas and David in the 1861 but not the others.

Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Hi Betty,

I am just wondering since the father died  if Jane Gordon simply remarried and took on the new husband's surname? This most likely happening between the 1861 and 71 census if you can't find her in the 1871 census.She would be enumerated under the new surname if that is the case. This would be another explaination for her "disappearance". What do you think? Have you looked for a re-marriage for her under her maiden or 1st husband's surname?

It is quite possible that she did take on another name but I would don't think the older children would have changed their names.

It could be that they have been transcribed as Garden or something else but that would need to have been done more than once..

The fact I could not find any of them made me wonder if they had emigrated.

I hope to pay a visit to Scotland's People before winter sets in.  Hopefully we can find some clues there.  The husband left a will.  There might be something that will help in it.

You should include the mother's surname and the father's forename when you are searching. here is a date in case he is found on a Canada census
Thomas Gordon was born April 22 1848  Kirkcudbright, Scotland
parents Thomas Gordon and Jean Maltman
Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950 http://search.labs.familysearch.org
Can see no evidence of any of them in 1881 census of Canada....
