David LLoyd George knew my great grandfather???
« on: Monday 19 July 10 23:07 BST (UK) »
Hi there
My wifes father, who's name was David, would very regularly proclaim that he was named David after David Lloyd George, the British prime minister. Quite an unusual claim for a Dubliner! His mother had always maintained that she was related to him. Like DLG they are also long gone.

I know it is a long shot, but Davids mother was Elizabeth Jones of Pentir, Carnarvonshire born 1894, her father was robert jones born 1864, probably from the same area, and his father, william jones born abt 1832. roberts wife was english, so i'd say shes ruled out of this one. and I only know williams wife as mary.

Lloyd George himself was born in manchester, though of welsh parentage, his father william george was from pembrokeshire, and died when DLG was only a year old, DLG's mother Elizabeth Lloyd was from Llnadystumdwy and moved back there after williams death to live with her brother Richard. This is also where DLG is buried today.

It has been niggling me for a while now, so if there is anyone out there who could possibly put a connection between these people, would be an amazing feat, but then I know from previous experience that there are some pretty amazing people associated with this site, and that is why I ask such a question, because if anyone can, one of you can.

All the best, and I am looking forwrd to hearing from you!

Pete,

Your story is intriguing. My great grandfather (Owen Owens b 14.2.1859 Llanystumdwy) was at school with DLG and is famously remembered in our family for having beaten him up at school. (No-one can remember why). As I understand it, DLG's father died young and his widow therefore took her family to her home town (Llanystumdwy) and so DLG went to school there. My mother (Megan Thomas) says she was named after DLG's daughter Megan Lloyd George, who I think was the first female Welsh MP.

So Lloyd George knew my gt grandfather too. (Reportedly).

I don't think that helps you with your enquiry one iota but I just thought I'd mention the mild coincidence.

Hello Pete

Just as well LG didn't know your Great Grandmother  ;D

I think this is going to be a tricky one to uncover but you never know.
Pentir is nearer to Bangor but LG family were at Criccieth in 1881 with his uncle Richard Lloyd. Llanystumdwy is to the West of Criccieth, which is on the southern side of Llyn Peninsular.

This may help a little:

William George, 1820-1864, was the second son of David and Mary George of
Trecoed. His father died when he was about eight and his mother married
Benjamin Williams. William's siblings were Ann, c1804-1891 (m David Evans),
Hannah, c1807-1871 (m David James), Mary, c1809-1858 (m Levi James), Phebe,
b c1810 (m John Thomas), Martha, b c1812 (m Benjamin Lewis), William,
c1813-1818, and John, b c1826.

Elizabeth Lloyd, 1828-1896, had a brother, Richard, 1834-1917, who does not
appear to have married. Elizabeth and Richard's parents were Dafydd Llwyd,
1800-1839, of Caellwyd and Highgate, and Rebecca (nee Samuel). Dafydd Llwyd
was the eldest son of Richard Dafydd alias Richard Davies, 1777-1862, the
younger son of Dafydd Llwyd of Llanllyfni, 1750-1809. Richard, b1777,
married ELIZABETH ROBERTS, 1774-1852, from Criccieth. Dafydd Llwyd,
1750-1809, also had a son called Robert Lloyd, 1775-1848, who had a son,
David Roberts.

My Great Grandfather, William Owen Evans (born 1890), also had a link to Lloyd George!

He used to work on his farms and deliver milk to him!

There is a Lloyd George Museum in Llanystumdwy in case that is of any interest to you....

Dear Morganllan,I believe Dafydd/David Lloyd married Rebeccah WILLIAMS 0n 8/june/1824 in Denio,Caernarvonshire.David's parish was Llanystumdwy.I'm not sure of the birth of Rebecca(h) but there is a record of a birth in Abererch(2-3 miles from Denio) on 3/jan/1802 of Rebecca Williams parents Elin and Wm..kind regards Ivorglyn
