Golden Cross, Hertfordshire??

My Great Grandmother Mary Jane Green is shown as living at Golden Cross, Mill End Rickmansworth in the 1861 census. I can not find anything called Golden Cross in that area. Can anyone help?

Hi Mike

The only "Cross" I know from the Mill End area is Maple Cross the next village/hamlet.

I don't have access to the census just now but I do have the 1851, is "Golden Cross" the name of the residence, I can't recall ever seeing it mentioned before.

Was Mary Jane born before 1851 or if you can give me the name of her parents I may be able to work out where they were living then, unless someone else can take a look at the 61 image & perhaps post just what it says.

I think that one of the previous names for the pub (The Cross at Maple Cross) was the Golden Cross. I'll see what I can find.

The unfortunate thing about the pub is that it is about to come down, if we haven't already missed it.

This is the transcript from GR relative to the census, the census sheet attached doesn't have Golden Cross on it.
If the Golden Cross is The Cross pub, they are living in The Vine Beer House at Mill End in the 1871 Census

Her Parents William Green c1818 Jane Rackley c1819 both of Rickmansworth He is shown 1851 as Agricultural Labourer but not on 1861 census.

The description says ....

"Part of the Parish of Rickmansworth comprising the hamlet of Mill End including the houses at Money Hill commencing Beeson's Farm at Money Hill and ending at Drayton Ford and including  the Keeper's Cottage in Ash Pit's Woods, Sheppards Farm and cottages Dell Hall all the houses and cottages in Mill End"

Secondly, this is an extract from an article in "The Rickmansworth Historian" No4 Autumn 1942 Pages 68-70 (Authors Messrs King & Prime)

Mr King (part describing Rickmansworth pubs)  "After that, of course, there's the Victoria Hotel. Coming down' the other way, there are none along the bottom until you get to the Fox and Hounds, that I used to' keep, or at least, that kept me for a few years, and I came out of that to where I live now. Then there's the Western, and then going down to Mill End, comes the Halfway House, and then the Red Lion, that was done away with years ago, at the same time as all those others, and the Spotted Dog, that was shut down at the same time. Do you know where that butchers shop is, just in Mill End? Well, next to that are two or three very old cottages, and then there was the Spotted Dog. The house is there now, but I expect it will have to come down when they widen the road. Then next there's the Vine, and then next to the fried-fish shop, where the iron-monger's used to be, there was another one. I can't recall its name now, but I know there was one there. Then the Five' Horseshoes was done away with. It stood just a little further down, right opposite where the baker's shop is, and then there was the Plough. That's been closed a good many years, too. It stood nearly opposite the laundry. It's got a stone step in front, and you used to have to step up two steps to get into the pub. It's a private 'house now, and a greengrocer has the yard at the side. After that there's only the Whip and Collar, until you get to the Golden Cross at Maple Cross, and that's all.
One I forgot to mention was the Tree at Mill End. My grandfather once kept that .. "

"Golden Cross" seems to be the close proximity of a pub once called "Golden Cross".

Your relative is towards the end of the route so close to Moneyhill House.

Chapel + 2 rows of cottages, dare we say that she lives in one of those?
