Catherine Riley
« on: Wednesday 21 July 10 06:04 BST (UK) »
Hi my name is Marcia and I am a descendant of Catherine Rileyof Eniskellen, County Fermanagh, Ireland.
I have traced Catherine"s journey from when she landed in Australia on the Ship Diadem.   I have tried unsuccessfully for a long time to gain information of Catherines Mother and Fathers Name  cant seem to get past  the Ballycassidy Work House she was in for 2 years.   Has anyone had any further luck with this, really would love to know so that I can finish her tree.
Regards
Marcia

Marcia,
Catherine seems to have been one of the 4000 orphan girls transported from Irish workhouses to Australia as part of the Earl Grey scheme between 1848 and 1850. She would have been an inmate if Enniskillen workhouse and came from White Hill Ballycassidy which is about 3 miles north of Enniskillen. She is recorded in the Irish Famine Memorial Sydney website.

Regards

EDIT  I have done a little more research into the geography and believe that Laragh, Ballycassidy and Whitehill are different townlands in the vicinity of Enniskillen. This is unusual as workhouse inmates were  usually registered as belonging to a particular electoral district where the other inhabitants would be taxed according to how many of their neighbours were inmates.

Laragh and Ballycassidy are both townlands in Trory Parish but think White Hill is just the name of an area there. Used to spend a lot of time at Laragh and Ballycassidy was just down the road so suspect it might be the next townland.

Hi,
There are three townlands , Whitehill Devenish and Whitehill North and South, both in Derryvullan. I discounted the latter two as they are in Lowtherstown (Irvinestown) Poor Law Union and the PRONI reference for Catherine in the Sydney Memorial site is for Enniskillen.

Yes, but I think there might be a White Hill in either Ballycassidy or Laragh or nearby that is not actually a townland.

Aghadowey,
That would make more sense. I wonder if either Ballycassidy or Laragh was an electoral district.

Laragh is in Ballycassidy D.E.D. in 1911 census but the Poor Law Union would probably been more likely to be noted.

thanks heaps everyone for replies, isnt it frustrating not to be able to find any trace of her family,  yes she must have had her reasons for not ever recording her Mother or Fathers names on documents.   I am from the line of her first born Mary Ann.
regards
